We\u2019ve all speed-walked past lost tourists on the Underground,\u00a0run red lights on Lime bikes and\u00a0elbowed others out the way to be the first in line for the Pret baguette (just me? OK).\u00a0Perhaps we\u2019re a bit impatient, but\u00a0it turns out that all that unbridled\u00a0determination\u00a0could\u00a0actually be making a difference, because London has just been named the most powerful city in the world in the new \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/mori-m-foundation.or.jp\/pdf\/GPCI2025_summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Global Power City Index<\/a>\u2019 (GPCI).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a02026 edition of the index assessed cities around the globe across six categories to determine their \u2018magnetism\u2019,\u00a0which\u00a0the report defines as their \u2018comprehensive power to attract people, capital and enterprises from around the world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-two different metrics were assessed and divided into these categories: economy (GDP per capita, employment levels, wage rate); research and development (number of patents, startups and presence of top universities); cultural interaction (proximity to World Heritage Sites and number of theatres, museums, stadiums and hotel rooms); livability (life expectancy and rent prices); environment (air quality and waste recycle rate); and accessibility (the price of a cab and the number of international flights).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"6923f5b7-cfe8-757b-ff2c-2802c9e40e33\" class=\"photo lazy inline\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"lazy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768583411_73_image.webp.webp\" alt=\"Tower Bridge and the City of London\" data-caption=\"\" data-credit=\"Photograph: Shutterstock\" data-width-class=\"\" data-image-id=\"106363931\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\nPhotograph: Shutterstock&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Although the Big Smoke\u00a0lost points from the previous year, it managed to top\u00a0the list for the 14th consecutive year in a row with an overall score of\u00a01,642.2 out of a possible 2,700. The\u00a0city ranked first in\u00a0the cultural interaction category thanks to its top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/museums\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">museums<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/nightlife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nightlife<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/hotels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hotels<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/london\/restaurants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">restaurants<\/a>. It also performed well in the economy, accessibility and\u00a0research and development categories, however its ranking in the livability and environment category dropped significantly \u2013 we can thank the rental and cost of living crises for that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>London beat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/tokyo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tokyo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/newyork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a>, which came second and third, respectively.
