(Image credit: Gianluca Masi, Virtual Telescope Project.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"4e9b2c68-496b-4c50-b104-f9b1e6749f84\">3I\/ATLAS was discovered on July 1, 2025 and was quickly confirmed to be just the third interstellar object to visit our <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar system<\/a> based on an analysis of its trajectory, which proved that it was not gravitationally bound to our parent star. The alien comet made its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/you-wont-see-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zoom-closest-to-the-sun-on-oct-30-but-these-spacecraft-will\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/you-wont-see-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-zoom-closest-to-the-sun-on-oct-30-but-these-spacecraft-will\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closest approach to the sun on Oct. 29<\/a> during an event called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-perihelion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perihelion<\/a>, prior to which it had <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-invader-comet-3i-atlas-is-still-full-of-surprises-an-unexpected-brightening-has-scientists-baffled\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-invader-comet-3i-atlas-is-still-full-of-surprises-an-unexpected-brightening-has-scientists-baffled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brightened more than had been expected<\/a> by scientists.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"4e9b2c68-496b-4c50-b104-f9b1e6749f84-1\">The comet was hidden from view in the weeks surrounding perihelion, as it passed on the far side of the sun relative to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a>. 3I\/ATLAS later made its <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-makes-its-closest-approach-to-earth-on-dec-19-heres-what-you-need-to-know\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/comets\/interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-makes-its-closest-approach-to-earth-on-dec-19-heres-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closest approach to our Blue Marble<\/a> on Dec. 19, when it passed 168 million miles (270 million kilometers) from our planet.
