Young Tower Hamlets have hit record breaking numbers as over 181,000 young\u00a0attendees\u00a0access\u00a0programmes\u00a0in two years,\u00a019\u00a0youth centres opened, and over\u00a05,000 sessions delivered in 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On\u00a0Tuesday 13 January,\u00a0Tower Hamlets launched the \u2018Young Tower Hamlets Strategy 2025-2027′\u00a0outlining\u00a0the\u00a0growth\u00a0of the service since the\u00a0council’s\u00a0initial\u00a0investment of \u00a313.7 million in 2023, and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0plans for the next two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The newly launched strategy sets out a commitment to providing a safe space for young people in every ward,\u00a0alongside\u00a0expanded sports, outdoor learning, targeted support,\u00a0detached youth\u00a0work\u00a0and enhanced youth participation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The\u00a0launch\u00a0event recognised youth workers from all strands of Young Tower Hamlets for their exceptional work in the service and impact on young people.\u00a0Each award was presented by\u00a0Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets Maium Talukdar.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman, said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI am proud that Tower Hamlets now has the best youth offer in the country.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe have the youngest population in London, which is why we have chosen to invest heavily in our young people. That includes providing 19 youth centres, and other groundbreaking measures\u00a0including being the only place in the country to offer universal free school meals,\u00a0school uniform\u00a0grants\u00a0and bursaries\u00a0for college and university.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cOur new Young Tower Hamlets Strategy builds on that success.\u00a0Importantly, this strategy has been created with our young people, and we will always\u00a0ensure\u00a0their voice is at the centre of\u00a0our\u00a0youth provision.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n “Deputy Mayor Maium Talukdar, Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Lifelong Learning, said:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0amazing to launch this strategy today, two years ago we\u00a0made an\u00a0ambitious\u00a0investment\u00a0of\u00a0\u00a313.7 million into\u00a0our\u00a0youth service,\u00a0at a time when others\u00a0were cutting\u00a0funding.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0glad to see it making an even greater impact than\u00a0what we imagined.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a great youth service, and our youth workers are really at the heart of it.\u00a0\u00a0Today we\u00a0are\u00a0not only celebrating\u00a0our amazing strategy, but the people that make it all possible \u2013 our youth workers.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHuge congratulations and thank you to all our youth workers who make this service great.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Musa Noor, said:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cAs the newly appointed Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0excited to work with the council to\u00a0develop its youth service.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis youth strategy is the first step in making\u00a0Tower Hamlets an opportunity-rich borough for young people.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0be working closely with the new Young Mayor Team to\u00a0champion and represent the voices of young people\u00a0in Tower Hamlets.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n As well as investing in youth services, the council offers a wide range of financial support for young people and families. It has re-introduced its Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) and University Bursaries, providing young people with \u00a3600 or \u00a31,500 grants to help with costs while they study.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Tower Hamlets was the first local authority to offer universal free school meals to both primary and secondary school pupils. Since rolling out the scheme in secondary schools\u00a0in 2023, more than 2 million meals have been served to secondary school pupils. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0Last year, the council also introduced school clothing grants to help with the cost of school uniforms, providing families with \u00a350 per child entering primary school and \u00a3150 per child entering secondary school.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
