There are several lakes in the region, the largest of which is Siljan on the southwestern edge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Every winter, thick ice forms over Lake Siljan &#8211; except in a few strange, recurring spots. These open patches, known as &#8220;ice wakes,&#8221; baffled locals for years. Why did they always appear in the same places? What kept these holes free of ice, even in bitter cold?<\/p>\n<p>Now a new study by scientists at Sweden\u2019s Chalmers University of Technology has found that these open spots are releasing astonishingly high levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/02\/13\/methane-could-make-or-break-the-worlds-global-warming-limit-where-in-europe-is-it-leaking-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>methane<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe natural methane emissions from the Siljan Ring lakes appear to be far more extensive than previously known,\u201d explains Johan Mellqvist, professor of optical remote sensing at the university. \u201cAt certain sites, we recorded emission rates up to 300 times higher than what is typically seen in lakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why are these natural methane leaks perplexing scientists?<\/p>\n<p>The decay of organic matter underwater produces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/05\/27\/member-states-green-light-new-rules-to-slash-methane-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>methane<\/strong><\/a> in all water bodies. What\u2019s unusual about the situation at Siljan is the highly concentrated nature of the emissions discovered.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, methane in lakes occurs as \u2018bubble emissions,\u2019 scattered leaks that pop up here and there on the surface. However, the results from Siljan suggest much stronger and localised leaks, forming detectable gas plumes in the air.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s unusual\u2014and quite strange\u2014that the emissions were so extremely localised,\u201d says Mellqvist. \u201cTo our knowledge, this kind of tightly concentrated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/10\/16\/methane-levels-are-rising-could-it-be-natures-response-to-warming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>methane<\/strong><\/a> leak has never been measured in a lake before. And we&#8217;ve only examined a small part of the Siljan Ring lakes so far. It&#8217;s possible we&#8217;ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The researchers developed a new means of detecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/09\/11\/two-thirds-of-global-methane-emissions-now-come-from-human-activity-researchers-say\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>methane leaks<\/strong><\/a>, using a tracer gas to track the emissions. This allowed them to identify concentrated \u2018hotspots\u2019 in the lake, and they found two 10-metre square spots where emissions were very high, along with several other smaller sources.<\/p>\n<p>They visited in 2023 and again in 2024, finding the same strong emissions both times. It suggests that this is an ongoing issue, with one site producing 3.5 tonnes of methane per year.<\/p>\n<p>As methane is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/09\/10\/co2-isnt-the-only-greenhouse-gas-where-are-the-most-potent-coming-from-and-can-they-be-sto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>potent greenhouse gas<\/strong><\/a>, 3.5 tonnes is equivalent to 85 tonnes of CO2. It\u2019s the same as driving a petrol car more than 300,000 km &#8211; from Stockholm to Sydney and back five times.<\/p>\n<p>Where are the methane emissions coming from?<\/p>\n<p>Researchers aren\u2019t sure where the emissions originate yet, but are working to find out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One theory is that the source could be \u2018deep gas\u2019 from underground. This is related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/07\/12\/anthropocene-this-lake-in-canada-could-prove-weve-entered-a-new-chapter-in-earths-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>meteorite<\/strong><\/a> impact at Siljan, which could have carried organic matter deep into the Earth, where it continues to produce methane to this day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If this is identified as the source, the situation could be unique to the Siljan Ring. However, if the source is found to be shallower sediment pockets, these emissions could be present in many more places.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are now planning to map a larger section of Siljan and conduct further research in other nearby lakes. Their findings could have implications far beyond Siljan in terms of how the world responds to natural gas seepage from rocks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf future studies reveal even larger-scale emissions, it could justify efforts to reduce them,&#8221; says Mellqvist.<\/p>\n<p>If this kind of leakage is happening in other lakes, too, it points to an underestimation of how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/10\/16\/methane-levels-are-rising-could-it-be-natures-response-to-warming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>methane<\/strong><\/a> is coming from natural sources.
