Brazilian media reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnnbrasil.com.br\/economia\/macroeconomia\/acordo-mercosul-ue-sera-assinado-neste-sabado-sem-presenca-de-lula\/#goog_rewarded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lula prioritized a bilateral meeting<\/a> with von der Leyen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/council-chief-antonio-costa-misses-brazil-talks-mercosur-signing\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/council-chief-antonio-costa-misses-brazil-talks-mercosur-signing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in Rio on Friday<\/a>, framing it as sufficient to mark Brazil\u2019s political ownership of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking alongside von der Leyen in Rio, Lula described the pact as \u201chistoric,\u201d saying it would create one of the world\u2019s largest free-trade areas, covering roughly 720 million people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s signing follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-approve-mercosur-trade-deal-for-signature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decisive political step in Brussels earlier this month<\/a>, when a qualified majority of EU countries approved the deal for signature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>France, Poland, Austria, Ireland and Hungary opposed the agreement, while Belgium abstained, reflecting lingering concerns \u2014 particularly over agricultural imports. To secure backing, the Commission agreed to additional safeguards that would kick in if farm imports from Mercosur surge.<\/p>\n<p>Following the signing, the agreement will enter a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-mercosur-trade-agreement-opponent-attempt-derail\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-mercosur-trade-agreement-opponent-attempt-derail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potentially lengthy ratification phase<\/a> in the EU.
