If you are currently on atorvastatin, you need to be careful about what you take alongside it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Atorvastatin is a type of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-says-people-statins-should-36381888\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">statin, which can help lower cholesterol levels<\/a>. These are typically prescribed to people who have been diagnosed with high blood cholesterol to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-says-its-never-late-36548305\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">prevent heart disease, including heart attacks and strokes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Your GP may also prescribe atorvastatin if you have a family history of heart disease, or a long-term health condition such as type 1 or type 2 diabetes or rheumatoid <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/health\/facts-arthritis-how-you-can-6416990\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">arthritis<\/a>. However, like with any medication, you must follow the official advice on how to safely take it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">On its <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/atorvastatin\/taking-atorvastatin-with-other-medicines-and-herbal-supplements\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">website<\/a>, the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/nhs\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">NHS<\/a> lists some \u201ccautions with other medicines\u201d. This means that you need to check you\u2019re OK to take atorvastatin alongside other drugs and supplements.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" NHS said: \u201cSome medicines can affect the way atorvastatin works and can increase the chances of you having serious side effects, such as muscle damage.\u201d It explained you must therefore tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, rifampicin or fusidic acid<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Antifungals such as ketoconazole, voriconazole or fluconazole<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Some HIV medicines<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Some hepatitis C medicines<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Warfarin, a medicine to help prevent blood clots<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Ciclosporin, a medicine for psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Colchicine, a medicine for gout<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Contraceptive pills, such as the combined pill<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Verapamil, diltiazem or amlodipine, medicines for high blood pressure and heart problems<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Amiodarone, a medicine that helps if you have an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you&#8217;re taking atorvastatin and need to take one of these medicines, your doctor may:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Prescribe a lower dose of atorvastatin<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Prescribe a different statin medicine<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Recommend that you stop taking atorvastatin for a while<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">These are not all the medicines that can affect the way atorvastatin works. \u201cFor a full list see the leaflet inside your medicine packet or check with your pharmacist\u201d, the NHS said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The health service said you should also consult your doctor or a pharmacist if you take atorvastatin and you\u2019re thinking of taking St John&#8217;s wort supplements or CoQ10.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" damage(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Common side effects<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">These common side effects of atorvastatin happen in more than one in 100 people:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Feeling sick (nausea) or indigestion<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Headaches<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Nosebleeds<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Sore throat<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Cold-like symptoms, such as a runny nose, blocked nose or sneezing<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Constipation or farting (flatulence)<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">Diarrhoea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The NHS added: \u201cDrinking a lot of alcohol regularly increases the chance of you having side effects with atorvastatin, and liver problems. If you think that atorvastatin is causing side effects and they&#8217;re making you want to stop taking it, talk to your doctor first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThey may be caused by another problem and not the medicine.
