{"id":703159,"date":"2026-01-18T00:20:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T00:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/703159\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T00:20:17","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T00:20:17","slug":"flynn-mcgarry-creates-relaxed-and-warm-dining-interior-at-cove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/703159\/","title":{"rendered":"Flynn McGarry creates &#8220;relaxed and warm&#8221; dining interior at Cove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A cohesive blend of natural timbers, including Douglas fir, cherry and ash wood, has been used to define the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/interiors\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interiors<\/a> of Cove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/restaurants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">restaurant,<\/a> self-designed by chef Flynn McGarry. <\/p>\n<p>McGarry, who designed his first restaurant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gem-nyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gem<\/a>, in 2018, intended to create a fine-dining experience for his second venture, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cove-nyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cove<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/new-york-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York<\/a>&#8216;s Hudson Square neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2287738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cove-flynn-mcgarry-restaurant-new-york-usa-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Wood panelled dining area \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>Chef Flynn McGarry designed Cove restaurant in New York to be &#8220;very simple and focused on wood&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Named after Paradise Cove, a beach in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/malibu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malibu<\/a> near McGarry&#8217;s childhood home, the cuisine and interiors of the restaurant intend to reflect the spirit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/california\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to create a relaxed, spacious, and warm atmosphere, where both the food and interiors are shaped by local ingredients,&#8221; McGarry told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2287739 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cove-flynn-mcgarry-restaurant-new-york-usa-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Dining area with timber clad walls \" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The pendant lights at Cove were created by hand by ceramicist Shane Gabier<\/p>\n<p>The space consists of two dining rooms wrapped around an open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/kitchens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kitchen<\/a>, both featuring a refined natural material palette.<\/p>\n<p>McGarry worked with Hudson Valley-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grainwoodstudio.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grainwood Studio<\/a> to create custom cherry wood cabinetry and dining tables, paired with J42 chairs from Danish furniture company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hay.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2287741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cove-flynn-mcgarry-restaurant-new-york-usa-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"dining area with large colourful paintings\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Artworks by painter Frederik Nystrup-Larsen inject colour into the understated interior<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wanted everything to be very simple and focused on wood,&#8221; McGarry explained.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the restaurant, the floors are made from a cool-toned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/denmark\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Danish<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/douglas-fir\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas fir<\/a>, while the walls, made from cherry wood, bring warmth and create continuity with the furniture.<\/p>\n<p>In the kitchen menu room, neutral pendant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lighting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lighting<\/a> by ceramicist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/shanegabier\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shane Gabier<\/a> hangs above high ceilings featuring beams made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cedar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cedar<\/a> wood. The space also features banquette seating in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maharam.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maharam<\/a>&#8216;s Mexidot fabric by Alexander Girard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2287745 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/cove-flynn-mcgarry-restaurant-new-york-usa-interiors_dezeen_2364_col_7-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"restaurant with open kitchen area \" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Chef Flynn McGarry self-designed the interiors for his first fine-dining restaurant<\/p>\n<p>Teak barstools by Gangs\u00f8 M\u00f8bler for Findahls M\u00f8blefabrik line the bar overlooking the open kitchen, designed with open shelving showcasing ceramics handpicked by McGarry.<\/p>\n<p>Art pieces by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/frederik_nystrup_larsen\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Frederik Nystrup-Larsen<\/a> provide pops of colour.
