A cohesive blend of natural timbers, including Douglas fir, cherry and ash wood, has been used to define the interiors<\/a> of Cove restaurant,<\/a> self-designed by chef Flynn McGarry. <\/p>\n

McGarry, who designed his first restaurant, Gem<\/a>, in 2018, intended to create a fine-dining experience for his second venture, Cove<\/a> in New York<\/a>‘s Hudson Square neighbourhood.<\/p>\n

Named after Paradise Cove, a beach in Malibu<\/a> near McGarry’s childhood home, the cuisine and interiors of the restaurant intend to reflect the spirit of California<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to create a relaxed, spacious, and warm atmosphere, where both the food and interiors are shaped by local ingredients,” McGarry told Dezeen.<\/p>\n

The space consists of two dining rooms wrapped around an open kitchen<\/a>, both featuring a refined natural material palette.<\/p>\n

McGarry worked with Hudson Valley-based Grainwood Studio<\/a> to create custom cherry wood cabinetry and dining tables, paired with J42 chairs from Danish furniture company, Hay<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“I wanted everything to be very simple and focused on wood,” McGarry explained.<\/p>\n

Throughout the restaurant, the floors are made from a cool-toned Danish<\/a> Douglas fir<\/a>, while the walls, made from cherry wood, bring warmth and create continuity with the furniture.<\/p>\n

In the kitchen menu room, neutral pendant lighting<\/a> by ceramicist Shane Gabier<\/a> hangs above high ceilings featuring beams made from cedar<\/a> wood. The space also features banquette seating in Maharam<\/a>‘s Mexidot fabric by Alexander Girard.<\/p>\n

Teak barstools by Gangs\u00f8 M\u00f8bler for Findahls M\u00f8blefabrik line the bar overlooking the open kitchen, designed with open shelving showcasing ceramics handpicked by McGarry.<\/p>\n

Art pieces by Frederik Nystrup-Larsen<\/a> provide pops of colour. Informed by the restaurant’s kitchen garden in Long Island, the large paintings, depicting plants and produce, bring to life the seasonal food of Cove.<\/p>\n

Soft white curtains by Maharam are drawn across the glazed walls of the restaurant, cocooning the calm dining interior from the street outside.<\/p>\n

Other New York restaurants featured on Dezeen include an art deco-influenced Manhattan restaurant named La T\u00eate d’Or<\/a> and a compact taco restaurant in New York’s Soho<\/a>.<\/p>\n
