target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:mummified cheetahs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">mummified cheetahs<\/a> in caves in Saudi Arabia, a discovery that could help shed light on current cheetah conservation efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The discovery was made in the Lauga cave network in the Arar area of the northern part of the country, per a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-025-03021-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Communications Earth and Environment;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Communications Earth and Environment<\/a> on Jan. 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The researchers found seven naturally mummified cheetahs, along with the skeletal remains of 54 other cheetahs, in caves \u2014 something which they called a \u201cserendipitous discovery,\u201d per the study.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Scientists used radiocarbon dating to confirm that the oldest remains date back to about 4,000 years ago, with the most recent remains dating back about 150 years, meaning they span from ancient to <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/scientists-discover-poisonous-arrowheads-used-by-hunters-60000-years-ago-11882808\" rel=\"nofollow md:leading-8 break-words\">Genomic sequencing further showed that the youngest of the cheetah mummies was closely related to what is now known as the Asiatic cheetah, while older specimens were more They currently inhabit parts of southern and eastern Africa, with a small critically endangered population found in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are an estimated 6,500 cheetahs remaining in the wild, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/species\/219\/259025524\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:IUCN Red List;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">IUCN Red List<\/a>.
