{"id":70484,"date":"2025-05-03T06:49:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T06:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/70484\/"},"modified":"2025-05-03T06:49:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T06:49:09","slug":"auckland-pensioner-who-lost-158k-in-transfer-error-receives-full-refund-from-uk-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/70484\/","title":{"rendered":"Auckland pensioner who lost $158k in transfer error receives full refund from UK bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">\u201cThis was a very expensive mistake.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The error meant that, rather than landing as intended in his Westpac account, the money was deposited into the account of a random Auckland mother. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/westpac\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/topic\/westpac\/\" target=\"_blank\">Westpac<\/a> was able to recover $28,000, police told Che that the woman &#8211; a beneficiary &#8211; used the rest of the money to buy two cars, transfer $60,000 to her boyfriend, and send $20,000 to a relative in Samoa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Desperate to recoup his money and blaming the banks for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/banks-roll-out-new-scam-protection-tool-how-confirmation-of-payee-will-work\/GBTOEL7MANFIVNZZGYOZSOT6PY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/banks-roll-out-new-scam-protection-tool-how-confirmation-of-payee-will-work\/GBTOEL7MANFIVNZZGYOZSOT6PY\/\">not checking that the recipient account name<\/a> matched that on the payment transfer, Che tried to negotiate compensation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But his attempts were knocked back by Westpac and Barclays, which both denied liability because the mistake was his. Photo \/ Jason Dorday<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Che told the Herald he was stunned by the unexpected news and was still in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHe said, \u2018Mr Che, I have good news for you. Barclays is going to refund all your money that you lost, plus \u00a3500 ($1200).\u2019 I was really hit by a tonne of bricks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI came over to my daughter\u2019s in a daze, but I didn\u2019t want to get too happy in case they might change their mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He needn\u2019t have worried. Photo \/ Jason Dorday<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of zeros,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A beaming Che met the Herald yesterday to discuss his unexpected windfall and to thank the newspaper for its coverage of his plight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He said he had lost 10kg due to anxiety and had many sleepless nights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He believed media pressure helped to secure the return of his savings. \u201cYou are such an angel.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">He was now deciding how best to invest the money to secure his financial future. You can see that I\u2019m smiling more now.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u2018Wrongful recipient\u2019 went on \u2018spending spree\u2019 <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Because of Che\u2019s payment error, the account number provided to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland-businessman-found-guilty-of-money-laundering-in-connection-with-2m-investment-scam\/QXO53DUIPNEGVFV72NGYDR3X5E\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/auckland-businessman-found-guilty-of-money-laundering-in-connection-with-2m-investment-scam\/QXO53DUIPNEGVFV72NGYDR3X5E\/\" target=\"_blank\">Westpac<\/a> had only 15 digits, not the intended 16. Photo \/ Michael Craig<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Westpac recommended that Che alert police and offered to contribute $3000 towards his legal costs \u201con receipt of an invoice\u201d if he wished to pursue civil proceedings against the woman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Che did contact police, who initially refused to investigate &#8211; saying it was a civil dispute &#8211; until Mt Roskill MP Carlos Cheung intervened and convinced police to re-examine Che\u2019s file. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It\u2019s understood the woman is now under investigation.
