Asking prices for British homes rose by the most on record for the Christmas and New Year period after a fall linked to uncertainty around finance minister Rachel Reeves&#8217; budget, property website Rightmove said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in Rightmove&#8217;s house price gauge comes after the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/uk\/uk-surveyors-turn-more-upbeat-about-housing-market-outlook-2026-01-15\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said last week<\/a> that there were signs of improving expectations for the market following Reeves&#8217; Colleen Babcock, property expert at Rightmove, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, asking prices are only back to where they were in the summer of 2025 before the budget rumours began surfacing, which unsettled the market and dented confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reeves announced 26 billion pounds ($35 billion) of tax increases but delayed the introduction of most of them and did not raise income tax rates as had been expected at one point.<\/p>\n<p>Rightmove said:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"article-list-module__unordered__aLEL9 article-list-module__disc__XcBxE article-body-module__paragraph__Ts-yF article-body-module__list__G8QPC\" role=\"list\" data-testid=\"unordered-0\">\n<li>\n<p>Average asking prices for new homes rose by 2.8% month-on-month in the four weeks to January 10 &#8211;
