{"id":70570,"date":"2025-05-03T07:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T07:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/70570\/"},"modified":"2025-05-03T07:32:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T07:32:11","slug":"germanys-intelligence-service-moves-against-far-right-afd-sets-off-quarrel-with-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/70570\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany&#8217;s intelligence service moves against far-right AfD, sets off quarrel with US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Germany&#8217;s domestic intelligence service on Friday designated the far-right AfD party as an extremist group, setting off a diplomatic spat with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The BfV intelligence agency, which had already designated several local branches of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.afd.de\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:AfD;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">AfD<\/a>) as right-wing extremists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verfassungsschutz.de\/SharedDocs\/pressemitteilungen\/DE\/2025\/pressemitteilung-2025-05-02.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said <\/a>it moved against the entire party due to its attempts to &#8220;undermine the free, democratic&#8221; order in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The classification gives authorities greater powers to monitor the party by lowering the barriers for such steps as intercepting telephone calls and deploying undercover agents.<\/p>\n<p>The conservative US administration quickly condemned the move.<\/p>\n<p>US Vice President JD Vance on Friday accused Germany of rebuilding a &#8220;Berlin Wall&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The West tore down the Berlin Wall together. And it has been rebuilt &#8212; not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German establishment,&#8221; Vance, who in February defiantly met the AfD leader in Munich, wrote on X. He said the AfD was &#8220;the most popular party in Germany&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it &#8220;tyranny in disguise&#8221; and said &#8220;Germany should reverse course&#8221;.
