During the test, the system ascended to an altitude of 2,000 meters, generating and feeding 385\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/CFynQ6h0b8<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cantworkitout\/status\/2010902119998767288\" data-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cantworkitout\/status\/2010902119998767288\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">January 13, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a id=\"elk-c07b6020-c141-490a-a450-155678e50a90\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>385 kilowatt hours of electricity<\/p>\n<p id=\"cd2c02fb-d1e2-4575-bef2-e58e65bd58c0\">During the flight, the airship climbed to roughly 2km and generated 385 kilowatt hours of electricity, which was fed into the local grid.<\/p>\n<p>The test marked the first real world power generation demonstration for the S2000, also called the Stratosphere Airborne Wind Energy System, or SAWES.<\/p>\n<p>Visually, the platform resembles a large airship, with a floating envelope and an integrated power generation structure suspended beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the system measures about 197ft long and 131ft wide and high, making it suitable for deployment closer to urban areas than many experimental airborne wind systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/energy\/worlds-first-megawatt-airship-rises-6560-ft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-url=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/energy\/worlds-first-megawatt-airship-rises-6560-ft\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\">Interesting Engineering<\/a> says the ascent took around 30 minutes, after which the platform maintained a stable hover while generating electricity.<\/p>\n<p>The S2000 relies on a helium filled aerostat to lift a lightweight wind power unit into higher altitude wind layers, where airflow is typically stronger and steadier.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity generated aloft is transmitted to the ground through a tether, which also plays a role in stabilizing and positioning the platform.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Weng Hanke, chief technology officer at Linyi Yunchuan, said the company is targeting both off grid uses and integration with conventional wind farms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne is for off-grid settings like border outposts, where it can serve as a relatively stable conventional energy source. The other is to complement traditional ground-based wind power systems, creating a three-dimensional approach to energy supply,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A key feature of the design is its ducted airflow system, formed between the main envelope and an annular wing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like wrapping the wind from all sides, constraining the airflow within this duct so that as much wind as possible is captured by the blades.
