In fact, much of what they did ended up unintentionally pissing people off.

The main reason was obvious: frontwoman Debbie Harry set off siloes of sexist communities because she was a woman leading a predominantly male movement. She stood up on stage with bags of confidence and sang from the heart, which, to those who believed the rockstar role was reserved for men only, felt like a turn in the wrong direction.

The other reasons involved people struggling to shift with the zeitgeist, and those who couldn’t come to terms with the fact that a band that emerged predominantly from the punk and new wave scene had suddenly become more disco-leaning and commercial. At this point, Blondie faced criticism from people accusing them of selling out, when really, they were following their gut and developing their artistic vision to maintain relevance.

We celebrate Blondie today for all of those reasons, branding them as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking artists in history. But back then, the arena was more convoluted, mixed with people who bought into them as one of the leading geniuses to come out of new wave, against those who thought they were nothing more than a massive fad.

Over the years, the members have had a lot to say about these opinions. Harry, especially, has likely faced the question of being a female musician in a male-dominated industry more times than she can count, but what seems especially interesting is her take on musical progression and all the reasons they weren’t really leaders in the punk movement to begin with.

Her basic push-back centres around the fact that, again, all they ever sought to do was follow their instinct artistically, and if that attracted certain labels or interpretations, that wasn’t exactly their burden to bear. Because the other thing was that all their songs came from personal experiences or stories they’d encountered over the years, ones they’d channelled into different styles to twist them into a different form of expression.

‘Heart of Glass’ was a prime example of this. Written by Harry and Chris Stein shortly after they met, the song was originally called ‘The Disco Song’. According to Harry, there wasn’t much meaning behind the song at first, inspired loosely by a “plaintive moan about lost love”. They tried several different arrangements before it shaped into something more quintessentially disco and funk-based, much to the shock and dismay of many of their punk-devoted loyalists.

One of the main things people took issue with was how commercial the band suddenly seemed, willingly so. Harry acknowledged this, simply saying, “It’s the kind of stuff I want to do”, but they almost played into the backlash, performing it in their sets when they knew that people thought they’d ditched their punk roots to become another version of the Bee Gees.

As keyboardist Jimmy Destri put it, “Chris always wanted to do disco. We used to do ‘Heart Of Glass’ to upset people.”

Elsewhere, he told the Los Angeles Times, “These new wave kids think they know everything about rock and roll, but they won’t accept anything else. They should listen to the album and realise that we haven’t changed our direction that radically.”

Related Topics

(Credits: Far Out / Alamy) Mon 19 January 2026 4:00, UK During their peak years, Blondie weren’t known…

[3936
42406,42408,77,269,16,15
0":"post-706502","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-music","8":"tag-blondie","9":"tag-debbie-harry","10":"tag-entertainment","11":"tag-music","12":"tag-uk","13":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
