Just months later, a nearby parcel of land was sold at a record price of 70,000 yuan per square metre, more than double what she paid.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She hesitated to sell, believing prices would go higher.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">But the momentum did not last. China\u2019s central bank, worried about an asset bubble, unleashed market-cooling measures in the summer of 2018 to clamp down on prices.<\/p>\n<p>That was followed by <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/coronavirus-pandemic-all-stories?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">the Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>, which drove China\u2019s property prices into their worst slump in decades \u2013 and they have yet to recover.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI honestly don\u2019t know where the bottom is,\u201d Kong said. \u201cOnce you\u2019ve experienced the highs, it\u2019s hard to believe the market will really keep falling. You keep thinking, maybe it\u2019ll bounce back soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/property?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">China\u2019s residential property market<\/a>, like a vessel that had just begun to steady itself, is once again facing renewed waves of uncertainty amid Trump\u2019s tariffs, which threaten to unleash a new era of doubt for China\u2019s economy \u2013 as well as its exporters and manufacturers.
