More than 85 people have signed a petition to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow-city-council\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Glasgow City Council<\/a> which calls for \u201ctimely\u201d talks with neighbours ahead of future events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It says residents feel \u201cdisregarded\u201d and argues the Green should remain \u201cprimarily a recreational space\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Councillors are set to decide whether action to address the issue is required at a meeting on Thursday. A report by council officials states engaging with \u201clocal communities potentially impacted by events to minimise disruption wherever possible is a priority\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The petition, titled \u2018Whose Glasgow Green\u2019, was submitted in December. A member of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/all-about\/east-end\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Calton Community Council<\/a>, the principal petitioner, will address councillors at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cGlasgow Green is a cherished publicly owned space managed by the city council,\u201d the petition states. It adds the Christmas wonderland was announced before any local consultation was held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe received no clear information about the type of event, which seems to be primarily a fairground. Moving it from George Square in the city centre places it in an otherwise quiet residential area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe find the proposed duration (November into January) unreasonable, as well as 10 til 10 daily opening hours. We ask the council to reconsider and limit these arrangements to mitigate the noise and other disruption to the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThe Green is or should be primarily a recreational space for the people of Glasgow. However, events held in 2025 have already limited public access and disrupted movement in the area for extended periods of time while events are set up and dismantled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The petition calls for advanced consultation before future events, as residents currently \u201cfail to see any balance between the adverse effects of events and any benefits to the local community\u201d. There are 86 signatures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A briefing note to councillors states the events sector \u201cincreases the economic value of tourism\u2026 allowing for investment into city amenities\u201d and the council has a \u201crobust community engagement process for major events held in parks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cGlasgow Green is one of the few areas of the city able to host major events and as such, the impact on the community can be significant at specific times throughout the year,\u201d the note adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThere is an almost static number of events held on the Green year on year and although a number of them are commercial and have a longer duration, the majority of events are community and charity based.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Figures show there were 74 events in 2025 and 2023, with 79 in 2024.
