{"id":71025,"date":"2025-05-03T11:32:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T11:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/71025\/"},"modified":"2025-05-03T11:32:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T11:32:10","slug":"the-proper-bristol-pub-with-cheap-pints-darts-and-pool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/71025\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8216;proper&#8217; Bristol pub with cheap pints, darts and pool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has been a part of the community since the 1930s<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_BRI_PG_250425intent-1.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The Good Intent on Broomhill Road(Image: PAUL GILLIS \/ Reach PLC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The first thing I notice when I arrive at The Good Intent is the extraordinary footwear worn by the chap propping up the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve seen the words \u2018F***\u2019 and \u2018Off\u2019 emblazoned on a pair of sliders and I can\u2019t stop looking at them as I sip my pint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The rest of the locals perched on bar stools with their cans of Natch cider aren\u2019t wearing anything quite so unusual or distracting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It\u2019s Friday lunchtime and The Good Intent has a steady trickle of drinkers coming and going.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The only pub in Broomhill if you discount the nearby Beeses riverside bar a two-minute walk away, this large red-brick 1930s pub is very much of the old school and one of a rapidly dying breed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Originally a Georges Brewery pub, it\u2019s similar in size and design to long-lost interwar Bristol pubs such as the Happy Landings in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/hengrove\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hengrove<\/a>, The Fellowship in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/filton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Filton<\/a> and The Friendship in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/knowle\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Knowle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Those three pubs are long gone &#8211; two are supermarkets and one is now flats &#8211; so The Good Intent is very much a survivor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Moore family ran the pub for several years and, more surprisingly perhaps, comedian Mike Reid &#8211; best known as Frank Butcher in EastEnders &#8211; was once part of the management of the pub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A large, airy two-bar pub with original wooden parquet floors and high ceilings, there is also a large garden at the back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As well as a dartboard and pool table, there are several TVs for Sky Sports although on this lunchtime, the entertainment was Now Classic Rock and The Rock 100 of the 80s with Mark Goodier.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_GoodIntent2.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The pool table is a popular option at The Good Intent(Image: Bristol Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The retro music seemed to be going down well with the regulars who joined in on Simple Minds\u2019 Alive and Kicking and John Parr\u2019s St Elmo\u2019s Fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Open from 11am, there are cheap pint deals all day, every day.
