{"id":713501,"date":"2026-01-22T17:23:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T17:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/713501\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T17:23:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T17:23:13","slug":"trump-takes-aim-at-britains-net-zero-agenda-in-davos-tirade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/713501\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Takes Aim at Britain\u2019s Net Zero Agenda in Davos Tirade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK\u2019s net zero policies were singled out in President Trump\u2019s long tirade against European energy struggles at the World Economic Forum in Davos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/trump-torches-unrecognisable-europe-in-scathing-davos-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Trump<\/a> described the UK economy\u2019s struggles in stark terms, suggesting that the Labour government had disregarded \u201cone of the greatest reserves in the world\u201d at the North Sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In his speech, he picked out countries that remained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/public-officials-not-truthful-about-fantasy-net-zero-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> to net zero, pointing to it as central reason for higher prices and stagnant growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Roughnecks-Riches-Start-Up-American-Fracking\/dp\/B0FCDBHGSW\" class=\"charts_banner_clicked charts_banner_add_view\" data-banner_id=\"38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"not_lightbox\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/book.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK produces one third of the total energy from all sources that it did in 1999,\u201d Trump said in his long speech.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are sitting on top of North Sea oil, one of the greatest reserves anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey like to say \u2018that\u2019s depleted\u2019. The North Sea is incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump suggested that oil and gas reserves remained undiscovered in the North Sea and blasted government policies for making it \u201cimpossible\u201d for companies to invest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He took aim at net zero taxes, claiming the UK government took \u201c92 per cent\u201d of revenue. Government analysis and industry sources estimate the real tax rate to be 78 per cent, which is still considered to be high.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trump went on to blast the UK\u2019s commitment to building more wind farms, claiming they ruined landscapes and were loss-making.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing I have noticed is the more wind mills a country has, the more the country loses and the worse that country is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said China was \u201csmart\u201d for selling net zero technology while not building its own wind mills. A report by <a href=\"https:\/\/about.bnef.com\/insights\/clean-energy\/chinese-manufacturers-lead-global-wind-turbine-installations-bloombergnef-report-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BloombergNEF<\/a> last year suggested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/starmer-gives-chinese-mega-embassy-full-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> accounted for 70 per cent of global wind farm installations in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is not the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/trump-condemns-uk-net-zero-push\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first time<\/a> Trump has attacked Labour\u2019s net zero policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The US president said as early as May last year that the UK\u2019s North Sea reserves still had \u201ca century of drilling left\u201d. He said they would help get energy costs down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump\u2019s swipes: Net zero to Fed chair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During his Davos address, Trump spoke about everything from drugs pricing to Europe not being \u201crecognisable\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When speaking about domestic economics policy, the US president repeated his attacks on outgoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/citadels-griffin-condemns-trumps-federal-reserve-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal Reserve <\/a>chair Jerome Powell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He revealed he had interviewed candidates for the next chair of the world\u2019s most important central bank, suggesting that he would choose someone that is \u201cgreat\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Trump appeared to express his desire to interfere with the Fed\u2019s independence. In comments that are likely to worry traders, he said rate-setters who backed raising interest rates had engaged in acts of \u201cdisloyalty\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be paying the lowest interest rate of anybody,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout us, most of the countries don\u2019t even work.
