Alan Shearer has backed Liverpool to surpass Manchester United for the number of English league title wins in the not-too-distant future. The Reds thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield<\/a> last Sunday to claim a second Premier League<\/a> title in five years and move level with their bitter North West rivals on 20 titles.<\/p>\n

After Sir Alex Ferguson’s successful two decades at Old Trafford, United moved above Liverpool <\/a>for the number of league title wins in 2011.<\/p>\n

But with their 20th and final success coming more than 10 years ago, Liverpool’s recent triumphs under Jurgen Klopp<\/a> and Arne Slot<\/a> have seen them draw level with United.<\/p>\n

Now, with both teams level, Alan Shearer is backing Liverpool<\/a> to edge ahead of United and become the first team in English history to win a 21st top-flight title.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Betfair<\/a>, Shearer said: “The target for Liverpool and Slot is always to win the Premier League and to win every trophy.<\/p>\n

“That’s the football club that they are, and you have to do it at Liverpool.<\/p>\n

“It’s been an amazing season for them. There were the disappointments of how they went out of the cups, but that happens.<\/p>\n

“Winning league titles is what Liverpool are all about.<\/p>\n

“They’ve won number 20 now and will be looking to win number 21.<\/p>\n

“Man United have 20 titles too, but they are miles away from winning the Premier League, so Liverpool won’t have to worry about United winning number 21 for a while.<\/p>\n

“Liverpool will be a lot closer to it next season than United will be.”<\/p>\n

Liverpool are next in action against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.<\/p>\n
