{"id":71470,"date":"2025-05-03T15:25:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T15:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/71470\/"},"modified":"2025-05-03T15:25:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-03T15:25:10","slug":"patrick-mouratoglou-names-the-teenage-atp-star-whose-level-is-much-higher-than-his-ranking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/71470\/","title":{"rendered":"Patrick Mouratoglou names the teenage ATP star whose &#8216;level is much higher than his ranking&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The young stars of the ATP Tour have impressed throughout 2025, picking up titles and rising up the rankings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Tour<\/a> players who have won \u2018big\u2019 titles in 2025 (Grand Slams and Masters 1000s) are under the age of 24.<\/p>\n<p>23-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/rod-laver-reacts-as-jannik-sinner-beats-alexander-zverev-in-the-australian-open-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open<\/a> in January, picking up his third Major title, with a straight sets win over Alexander Zverev.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/holger-rune-reacts-on-social-media-after-losing-indian-wells-final-to-jack-draper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Draper beat Holger Rune<\/a>, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch his maiden Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2205614862-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images\" class=\"wp-image-74842\" \/>Photo by Clive Brunskill\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Transitioning onto clay courts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/roger-federers-former-coach-says-he-has-a-big-concern-forming-about-carlos-alcaraz-despite-his-title-win-in-monte-carlo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Alcaraz won the Monte-Carlo Masters<\/a>, as the Spaniard picked up his 18th tour-level title before his 22nd birthday.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was a player younger than all three who won at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/miami-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miami Open<\/a> earlier this year, as one top coach now claims he is competing at a level much higher than his ranking would suggest.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Mouratoglou says Jakub Mensik\u2019s \u2018level is much higher than his ranking\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Instagram, Naomi Osaka\u2019s coach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/patrick-mouratoglou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Mouratoglou<\/a>, shared his thoughts on the Czech teenager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/jakub-mensik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">[Jakub] Mensik<\/a> is not top ten yet because he\u2019s coming from far, and he\u2019s rising fast in the rankings, and it takes time to reach the top ten,\u201d said Mouratoglou.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t forget that he won a Masters 1000 in Miami just a few weeks ago, beating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novak [Djokovic]<\/a> in the final, so his level is much higher than his ranking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mouratoglou\u2019s thoughts came as part of a wider discussion, reacting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/what-alexander-bublik-told-the-umpire-about-jakub-mensik-immediately-after-losing-to-him-at-the-madrid-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexander Bublik\u2019s comments about the state of men\u2019s tennis<\/a> during his defeat to Mensik in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember when tennis was easy, like five years ago, it was so easy to play tennis,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/alexander-bublik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bublik<\/a> to umpire Mohamed Lahyani.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had a bunch of random people in the top 50, barely moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow this guy [Mensik] is not even top five, not even top ten. The f\u2014 is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mouratoglou disagreed with Bublik\u2019s comments, suggesting that using Mensik as an example of tennis becoming stronger was unfair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs much as I love [Alexander] Bublik, I cannot agree with him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, it\u2019s more that he was losing; he was emotional in his own way, which is to be funny and say crazy things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says the top 50 is so much stronger now than five years ago. I don\u2019t think so. Which is probably true. On hard court for sure, and if not on clay yet, probably soon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he\u2019s playing a guy whose ranking is lower than his real level. So that\u2019s why he has that feeling, but I don\u2019t feel like that feeling is true in general in the top 50.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like the level is extremely high. Every player is in danger in any round, but I think it was the case already five years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mensik beat Bublik, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/madrid-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madrid Open<\/a> quarterfinals, where he fell to defeat against Francisco Cerundolo.<\/p>\n<p>Is Jakub Mensik on track to break into the top ten in 2025?<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic start to his season, shocking the world in March when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/novak-djokovic-sends-message-to-jakub-mensik-on-social-media-two-days-after-losing-to-him-in-the-miami-open-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mensik beat Djokovic<\/a> to claim the title in Miami.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Mensik then backed that performance up with a strong run to the last eight in Madrid, where Cerundolo put an end href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Finals<\/a> in Turin.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen if Mensik can continue in this rich vein of form throughout the remainder of 2025, but you wouldn\u2019t want to bet against it.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old is set to return to action at the Italian Open, which begins on Monday, May
