{"id":716333,"date":"2026-01-23T23:22:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T23:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/716333\/"},"modified":"2026-01-23T23:22:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T23:22:23","slug":"ukraine-russia-us-talks-open-in-abu-dhabi-with-territory-as-key-issue-russia-ukraine-war-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/716333\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine-Russia-US talks open in Abu Dhabi with territory as key issue | Russia-Ukraine war News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelenskyy says territorial disputes will be central, but Russia must be ready to end war it started.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian and Russian negotiators have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2026\/1\/23\/ukraine-talks-live\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begun talks<\/a> in the United Arab Emirates, with the key issue of territory dominating the agenda as the United States pushes for an agreement to end the nearly four-year war.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions in Abu Dhabi on Friday were the first direct public negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv on a plan being pushed by US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration to end the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe talks commenced today in Abu Dhabi and are scheduled to continue over two days, as part of ongoing efforts to promote dialogue and identify political solutions to the crisis,\u201d the UAE\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said territorial disputes would be a central issue in the discussions but stressed that \u201cthe most important thing is that Russia should be ready to end this war, which it started\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement shared on Telegram, Zelenskyy said he was in regular contact with the Ukrainian delegation, but it was too early to draw conclusions from Friday\u2019s talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll see how the conversation goes tomorrow and what the outcome will be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions in the Emirati capital came a day after Zelenskyy met with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland \u2013 and hours after US envoy Steve Witkoff held late-night talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from the Russian capital Moscow, Al Jazeera\u2019s Yulia Shapovalova said the talks between Putin and Witkoff lasted nearly four hours but did not resolve the main sticking points to reaching a deal \u2013 namely, territorial disputes and security guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia demands that the Ukrainian army leave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/14\/russia-turning-occupied-donbas-into-huge-military-base-to-frighten-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Donbas region<\/a>, which is unacceptable to Ukraine,\u201d Shapovalova explained.<\/p>\n<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that Russia\u2019s insistence on Ukraine yielding all of Donbas \u2013 including the 20 percent of Donetsk which is still under Ukrainian control \u2013 was \u201ca very important condition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Kremlin foreign affairs adviser Yury Ushakov, who participated in Putin\u2019s meeting with Witkoff, also said \u201cit was reaffirmed that reaching a long-term settlement can\u2019t be expected without solving the territorial issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Russia\u2019s state-run TASS news agency reported that the discussions in Abu Dhabi included possible buffer zones and monitoring mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, Ukraine has demanded security guarantees from its Western allies, including the US, should a deal to end the war be signed, in order to deter Russia from invading again.<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainians have faced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/1\/23\/psychological-war-on-society-russia-plunges-ukraine-into-darkness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">widescale power outages<\/a> this winter as Russian attacks on the capital Kyiv and other parts of the country target energy infrastructure, leaving thousands of families struggling to stay warm in freezing temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Before Friday\u2019s talks began, Ukraine said Russian strikes had killed three people in the Kharkiv region and four people \u2013 including a father and his five-year-old son \u2013 overnight in the east.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the continued fighting, Trump said this week that he believed both Putin and Zelenskyy wanted to reach an agreement to end the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe they\u2019re at a point now where they can come together and get a deal done.
