At an emotional press conference, Kimberly Darroch said the former SNP First Minister \u201cknows something\u201d about the dirty water scandal and urged her to be honest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Kimberly also accused the Scottish Government of failing victims and claimed Sturgeon and Swinney have been hiding from her. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/news\/glasgow-news\/glasgow-hospital-patient-molly-cuddihys-33283643\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Queen Elizabeth University HospitalLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">Queen Elizabeth University Hospital<\/a> opened in 2015 but has been dogged by safety issues that are being investigated by a public inquiry by Lord Brodie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Several children died and at least 84 people fell ill after catching infections at the hospital. In 2019, in was revealed that ten-year-old cancer patient Milly Main had been one of the victims two years earlier after a whistleblower bravely came forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">NHSGCC initially denied a link between the building and a spike in infections, but days ago admitted the infections were probably linked to bugs in the water system, the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/milly-mains-mum-urges-nicola-36602383\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" Record reportsLink opens in a new tab.\" rel=\"follow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\"> Record reports<\/a>. Speaking alongside Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has helped expose the contaminated water scandal, Darroch said: \u201cI do believe that Nicola Sturgeon knows something. My message to her is to come forward and be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She was also asked about First Minister Swinney and Sturgeon not meeting her: \u201cI just think it\u2019s their way, isn\u2019t it? They just hide things or sweep things under the carpet. Them not seeing me is them hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She hit out at the Government over the scandal: \u201cTo the Scottish Government, I expected more from you. Your inactions have failed us and our children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a personal statement, she gave a cautious welcome to the u-turn by NHSGGC: \u201cI welcome GGC\u2019s change of position although it is a little unclear which infections they are accepting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIt is still a significant milestone in regards to getting justice for Milly and others who have been affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe are certainly closer to the truth than we were six years ago. The only thing I can be sure of today is Milly would not want me to give up until the truth was uncovered and I will not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">As well as criticising the SNP Government, Darroch urged NHSGGC to go further: \u201cPlease finally do the right thing. Admit where, when and why it went wrong whilst being completely transparent and own it. We need to prevent this from ever happening again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She also paid tribute to the whistleblowers who exposed the dirty water scandal: \u201cThank you for showing courage and resilience and standing up for our children and loved ones when no one else would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Maureen Dynes, whose husband Tony contracted two infections during his cancer treatment at the QEUH and died in 2021, also issued a powerful statement at the press conference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She said of the whistleblowers: \u201cI am exceedingly grateful to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">She added: \u201cI just hope that we do get answers. I hope that Lord Brodie has heard everything that has been said and that the truth comes out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Sarwar paid tribute to the families who have spoken out, as well as the three doctors who blew the whistle on issues at the hospital \u2013 Dr Teresa Inkster, Dr Penelope Redding and Dr Christine Peters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cThey are three amazing, inspiring, strong women that were willing to risk their jobs, willing to risk their professional reputations, and willing to take on the might of an organisation that attempted to bully and silence them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cI actually think the nation owes you a huge thank-you and I hope you get the recognition and reward you deserve for the bravery you have shown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Sarwar added that if the three whistleblowers were \u201cnot satisfied\u201d with the management of the hospital, \u201cthen neither am I and neither should anybody across our great country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Ms Sturgeon have been approached for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Several children died and at least 84 people fell ill after catching infections at the super-hospital.
