Ukraine has condemned a \u201cbarbaric attack\u201d by Russia on its major cities \u2013 as peace talks<\/a> resume for the second day.<\/p>\n

It comes as delegations from the US, Ukraine and Russia have been meeting in Abu Dhabi for the first trilateral peace talks since Moscow\u2019s full-scale invasion<\/a> of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n

Russia launched a wave of strikes on Ukraine\u2019s two largest cities in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing at least one person and wounding 31 others.<\/p>\n

Officials said the strikes left at least 1.2 million people without power amid sub-zero temperatures.<\/p>\n

Kharkiv\u2019s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said that 19 people were injured during a sustained assault on the city in the early hours of Saturday morning, which damaged a hostel for displaced people and a maternity hospital.<\/p>\n

The mayor of Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said one person had died and four had been wounded in the strikes on the city \u2013 and its critical infrastructure had been damaged, leaving 6,000 buildings without heating.<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, condemned Russia\u2019s attack, saying the \u201cbarbaric\u201d overnight assault proved \u201cthat Putin\u2019s place is not at the board of peace, but at the dock of the special tribunal\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added the \u201cbrutal\u201d attack had \u201chit not only our people, but also the negotiation table\u201d.<\/p>\n

Regional \u200benergy company, Chernihivoblenergo, said hundreds of \u200bthousands of \u2060people were \u200dleft without power, and an important \u200cenergy facility \u2060was damaged in Ukraine\u2019s Chernihiv \u200bregion.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelensky claimed in a post on X that Russia\u2019s main target was Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure \u2013 something Russia has consistently targeted throughout the conflict.<\/p>\n

He also sent well wishes to the family of the person killed and praised the work of Ukrainian emergency services, including firefighters battling raging fires in the cities.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cTragically, this attack has claimed the life of one person. My condolences to their family and loved ones. All necessary services are now working at the sites of the Russian strikes, eliminating all consequences: rescuers, medical teams, municipal services, energy workers, and repair crews.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thank every person involved. I am also grateful to all the air defense personnel who repelled the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Disturbing footage and photos have emerged showing firefighters scrambling to tackle flames in the cities amid snow.<\/p>\n

The strikes come after Donald Trump said last week that Vladimir Putin had agreed to join his \u2018Board of Peace\u2019 \u2013 an organisation focused on promoting peacekeeping \u2013 but this has not been confirmed by the Russian leader.<\/p>\n

Peace talks are expected to resume later today. Before this morning\u2019s strikes, the US claimed they have been \u201cproductive\u201d so far.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Zelensky said: \u201cThe most important thing is that Russia should be ready to end this war, \u200bwhich it started.<\/p>\n

It was revealed yesterday that Putin has discussed a Ukraine settlement with Donald Trump\u2019s envoys Steve Witkoff<\/a> and Jared Kushner during marathon overnight talks.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin insists that in order to reach a peace deal, Kyiv must withdraw its troops from the areas in the east that Russia illegally annexed but has not fully captured.<\/p>\n

Russia, which occupies roughly 20 per cent of Ukraine, wants the nation to hand over large areas of territory in the east of the country. Kyiv has ruled this out.<\/p>\n
