{"id":717608,"date":"2026-01-24T13:07:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T13:07:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/717608\/"},"modified":"2026-01-24T13:07:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T13:07:22","slug":"russia-launches-barbaric-attack-on-ukraine-as-peace-talks-resume","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/717608\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia launches &#8216;barbaric&#8217; attack on Ukraine as peace talks resume"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe overnight attacks hit Ukraine&#8217;s two largest cities, leaving one dead and 31 injured\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>Ukraine has condemned a \u201cbarbaric attack\u201d by Russia on its major cities \u2013 as <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/what-putin-is-actually-after-in-landmark-ukraine-peace-meeting-4189666?srsltid=AfmBOoqi46EN3iNselabA051IJIYlkzQUSU4bQ3-lga_0GgVkkV41qfG&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peace talks<\/a> resume for the second day.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as delegations from the US, Ukraine and Russia have been meeting in Abu Dhabi for the first trilateral peace talks since Moscow\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/russia-ukraine-war?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> full-scale invasion<\/a> of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Russia launched a wave of strikes on Ukraine\u2019s two largest cities in the early hours of Saturday morning, killing at least one person and wounding 31 others.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the strikes left at least 1.2 million people without power amid sub-zero temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Kharkiv\u2019s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said that 19 people were injured during a sustained assault on the city in the early hours of Saturday morning, which damaged a hostel for displaced people and a maternity hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Ukraine\u2019s capital Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said one person had died and four had been wounded in the strikes on the city \u2013 and its critical infrastructure had been damaged, leaving 6,000 buildings without heating.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"507\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_282028109.jpg\" alt=\"Ukrainian emmergency personnel work to extinguish a fire at the site of an air attack in Kyiv on January 24, 2026, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. (Photo by Oleksandr Magula \/ AFP via Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-4192369\"  \/>Firefighters extinguish flames in the snow in Kyiv (Photo: AFP)<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, condemned Russia\u2019s attack, saying the \u201cbarbaric\u201d overnight assault proved \u201cthat Putin\u2019s place is not at the board of peace, but at the dock of the special tribunal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He added the \u201cbrutal\u201d attack had \u201chit not only our people, but also the negotiation table\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Regional \u200benergy company, Chernihivoblenergo, said hundreds of \u200bthousands of \u2060people were \u200dleft without power, and an important \u200cenergy facility \u2060was damaged in Ukraine\u2019s Chernihiv \u200bregion.<\/p>\n<p>Volodymyr Zelensky claimed in a post on X that Russia\u2019s main target was Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure \u2013 something Russia has consistently targeted throughout the conflict.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"505\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SEI_282015268_beb924.jpg\" alt=\"Ukrainian rescuers work at the site of a damaged residential building following an air attack in Kharkiv on January 24, 2026, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. My condolences to their family and loved ones. All necessary services are now working at the sites of the Russian strikes, eliminating all consequences: rescuers, medical teams, municipal services, energy workers, and repair crews.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thank every person involved.
