Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has suggested that a Reform UK government would emulate the Trump administration\u2019s ICE raids.<\/p>\n
Addressing a conference for the Fabian Society at the Guildhall in central London this afternoon, Khan described ICE as \u201ca de facto paramilitary force targeting and terrorising diverse communities\u201d. He added: \u201cthis is a new extreme, and one a Reform government could seek to emulate, leaving minorities fearing a tap on the shoulder.\u201d<\/p>\n
The London\u2019s Mayor\u2019s speech focused on \u201cissues that have become contentious and weighed heavily on our politics over recent years: immigration and integration\u201d. Citing \u201cthe return of far-Right populism and nativism\u201d, he argued that \u201cthe idea that we can be diverse, united and prosperous is under threat like never before.\u201d<\/p>\n
Khan, who has frequently clashed with Donald Trump and accused<\/a> the US President of directing \u201chatred and bile\u201d at him, told the Fabians conference today that \u201cthe White House\u2019s National Security Strategy recently made the preposterous claim that Europe is at risk of civilisational erasure.\u201d He added that \u201cthe far-Right is spreading the same message in Europe with the National Rally in France, the AfD in Germany, the PVV in the Netherlands, and the Brothers of Italy.\u201d<\/p>\n In Britain, Khan said, \u201cReform and the Tories are dancing to the same tune. They paint a dystopian picture of London as a city that has fallen.\u201d Calling the rhetoric of the UK\u2019s Right-of-centre parties \u201ccruel, callous and deeply dangerous\u201d, the London Mayor claimed that \u201cthey construct lies, seek to manufacture an enemy, pit citizens against one another for political gain, and stoke fear by blaming \u2018the other\u2019 for all of society\u2019s ills.\u201d According to Khan, Reform and the Conservatives \u201ccan\u2019t stand what London represents \u2014 a city that\u2019s diverse, progressive and thriving, with a Mayor who happens to be a Muslim\u201d.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, Reform leader Nigel Farage announced<\/a> that Westminster City Councillor Laila Cunningham<\/a>, who is Muslim, would be the party\u2019s candidate for the 2028 London mayoral election. Cunningham has previously claimed<\/a> that the capital is \u201cno longer safe\u201d and has seen a \u201crape epidemic\u201d<\/a> under Khan\u2019s leadership. She has also proposed that women wearing burqas should be subject to stop and search, comments which Khan labelled<\/a> \u201coffensive\u201d.<\/p>\n Should Reform reach power following the next general election, Farage has pledged<\/a> to abolish indefinite leave to remain, which gives immigrants the right to live and work in the UK before they receive citizenship. The party\u2019s Operation Restoring Justice plan<\/a> aims to deport 600,000 illegal immigrants in Reform\u2019s first term in office, with five such flights leaving the UK each day and the detention of all illegal arrivals including women and children.<\/p>\n The Trump administration\u2019s ICE raids have come under increasing scrutiny this month after the fatal shooting<\/a> of Renee Good by a federal agent in Minneapolis, as well as several recorded instances<\/a> of officers detaining children as young as<\/a> two years old. Farage has previously been accused<\/a> of taking inspiration from Trump\u2019s ICE operations, while Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has vowed<\/a> to implement a similar \u201cremovals force\u201d to deport over 100,000 illegal immigrants each year if her party returns to office.<\/p>\n Speaking at the Fabians conference today, Khan said Britain should \u201creset the immigration debate\u201d which is currently \u201cdictated by hysteria, hatred and fearmongering\u201d.
