{"id":718746,"date":"2026-01-25T01:31:12","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:31:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/718746\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T01:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T01:31:12","slug":"donald-trump-praises-uk-troops-as-brave-warriors-after-widespread-condemnation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/718746\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump praises UK troops as &#8216;brave&#8217; warriors after widespread condemnation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">US President Donald Trump has praised &#8220;brave&#8221; British soldiers, calling them warriors, a day after remarks he made about NATO troops in Afghanistan were described as <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-24\/european-veterans-outraged-over-trump-nato-troops-comments\/106264332\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106264332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;insulting and appalling&#8221; by the UK&#8217;s Prime Minister Keir Starmer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Trump provoked widespread anger in Britain and across Europe after he said European troops had stayed off the front lines in Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Britain lost 457 service personnel killed in Afghanistan, its deadliest overseas war since the 1950s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For several of the war&#8217;s most intense years, it led the allied campaign in Helmand, Afghanistan&#8217;s biggest and most violent province, while also fighting as the main US battlefield ally in Iraq.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America!&#8221; Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors. It&#8217;s a bond too strong to ever be broken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Trump&#8217;s initial comments had provoked an unusually strong reaction from Keir Starmer, who has tended to avoid direct criticism of Mr Trump in public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-24\/european-veterans-outraged-over-trump-nato-troops-comments\/106264332\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU veterans outraged over Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Donald Trump criticised NATO during a Fox News interview on Thursday, saying the US had &#8220;never needed&#8221; the alliance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The British leader&#8217;s office issued a statement to say the prime minister had spoken to the president on Saturday about the issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;The prime minister raised the brave and heroic British and American soldiers who fought side by side in Afghanistan, many of whom never returned home,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u00a0&#8220;We must never forget their sacrifice, he said.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Veterans in Britain and elsewhere have been lining up to condemn the US president&#8217;s comments to Fox Business Network&#8217;s Mornings with Maria on Thursday, in which he said that the United States had &#8220;never needed&#8221; the transatlantic alliance and accused allies of staying &#8220;a little off the front lines&#8221; in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Among them was King Charles&#8217;s younger son Prince Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect,&#8221; he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-01-25\/greg-moriarty-us-ambassador-rudd\/106266786\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106266786\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has told the ABC Insiders program Mr Trump&#8217;s remarks were &#8220;not acceptable&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I note that President Trump has made a new statement overnight as well in which he&#8217;s acknowledged the contribution,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Those 47 Australian families [of soldiers who died fighting in Afghanistan] will be hurting by these comments.
