(Supplied: Jennene Riggs)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Now, there is only an estimated 150 birds left in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is believed populations have declined due to loss of habitat, predation by feral cats and foxes, increasing fire activity and low rainfall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The last wild population lives in a tiny sliver of Cape Arid National Park and the neighbouring Nuytsland Nature Reserve, 100 kilometres east of Esperance.<\/p>\n<p>Fire sweeps through park<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Last weekend a bushfire sparked by lightning quickly swept through the national park before being brought under control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The bushfire area is currently still being monitored by DBCA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">DBCA regional ecologist Sarah Comer said it was estimated 11,000 hectares of kyorling habitat were destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our preliminary estimates are that around 30 per cent of the core habitat was burnt, and obviously we need to do a fair bit of monitoring after the fire to confirm that,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman in a beanie and a head torch looks into the distance. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1ebd253affc053027d6d8c26e374de69.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Sarah Comer&#8217;s team will monitor the kyorling population in the coming months.
