Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on Saturday that a large majority of Hungarians support Ukraine’s entry into the European Union, criticizing Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s opposition through “controlled surveys.”<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the way, Orban\u2019s opposition organized an open survey for all Hungarians. Seventy percent support Ukraine joining the EU,” Zelenskyy told journalists in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.<\/p>\n

“So, the people of Hungary are with us. You know, he conducted his own survey, supposedly showing people were against it. He controlled that poll. But there\u2019s another poll, and it shows 70% in favor of Ukraine,\u201d he was quoted by Interfax-Ukraine as saying.<\/p>\n

He attributed the Hungarian leader\u2019s position to domestic political maneuvering, saying: \u201cJust don\u2019t drag us into your elections. That\u2019s what he (Victor Orban) is doing\u2014by blocking us in the EU. In the end, this strategy won\u2019t be a winning one.”<\/p>\n

“Why? Because, ultimately, the people there support Ukraine. No matter how much he tries to manipulate public opinion.”<\/p>\n

Zelenskyy further criticized Orban\u2019s actions as \u201cvery dangerous\u201d for the EU, warning that blocking Ukraine\u2019s membership bid undermines the principle of sovereignty.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re communicating with our other partners and signaling that what he\u2019s doing is dangerous for the European Union. He may be opposed, but taking steps to block our accession\u2014he has no right to do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian president also confirmed that Kyiv continues to meet EU membership benchmarks. \u201cWe expect to be technically ready by July 1. We believe we\u2019ll receive support from everyone\u2014except one specific country,\u201d he noted, referring to Hungary.<\/p>\n

He added that ongoing talks between Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna and Hungarian officials have so far yielded \u201cno results.\u201d<\/p>\n
