\u201cTen to 15 years ago, a lot of crime came from petty theft and burglaries. But some of the population in underprivileged areas, looking for economic opportunities, turned to the drug trade, which offered a lot more money and the same amount of prison time if they were caught,\u201d said Salim El Jihad, a N\u00eemes resident who leads the local nongovernmental organization Suburban.<\/p>\n

The National Rally is betting on N\u00eemes as a symbolic pickup. The race is shaping up to be a close three-way contest between Communist Vincent Bouget, the National Rally\u2019s Julien Sanchez and conservative Franck Proust, N\u00eemes\u2019 deputy mayor from 2016 to 2020.<\/p>\n

Bouget \u2014 who is backed by most other left-wing parties, including moderate forces like the Socialist Party \u2014 told POLITICO that while security is shaping up to be a big theme in the contest, it raises \u201ca broader question around social structures.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat citizens are asking for is more human presence, including public services and social workers,\u201d Bouget said.<\/p>\n
