Northern Ireland can expect another 10 days of rain according to the Met Office, after a wetter January than usual.<\/p>\n

With no signs of the drab weather coming to an end, there is a yellow and amber weather warning for wind and rain in place across the region, <\/a>as we brace for Storm Chandra. <\/p>\n

The first named storm of the year for Northern Ireland<\/a> is due to sweep the country on Tuesday, with a yellow warning for rain in place until Wednesday. The amber warning for wind is impacting Co Antrim, Down and Derry between 5am and 9pm on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The Met Office is warning that we\u2019re likely to see delays, cancellations to public transport and air services could well be affected. There is a potential for flooding and some local power cuts as well.<\/p>\n

Marco Petagna from the Met Office told The Irish News<\/a> January 2026 is experiencing more rain than the same month in previous years, with no sign of it brightening up at all.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWe\u2019ve certainly seen more than the normal amount of rain for January, 129mm for the province so far this month, which is 112% of normal. We are already above what we\u2019d normally get for the whole month of January on average\u2026 with much more rain to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of rain today (Monday) and there\u2019s further rain sweeping across Northern Ireland over the next 24 hours as well. It will look very unsettled. We\u2019ve got a yellow rainfall warning out for Northern Ireland all the way through now till midnight tonight.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe could see 10 to 40 millimetres, which is one and a half inches or so of rain for the rest of the day today (Monday) and that\u2019s ahead of then some very disturbed weather pushing up from the south as Storm Chandra pushes up. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an amber warning out for wind and we\u2019re talking about gusts fairly widely going into tonight and tomorrow, increasing to around 40 to 50 miles an hour. But towards the north and east of the province, we could see gusts of 60 to 70, possibly even locally 75 miles an hour, which could cause a few problems as we go into Tuesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd as well as that\u2026 a further 20 to 70 millimetres of rain is possible. So that\u2019s another one to three inches of rain on top of what we\u2019ve got today. <\/p>\n
