On Friday, she even said she hoped to \u201cfinally\u201d be able to nominate him for the Nobel peace prize.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">Since Trump\u2019s re-election, European capitals have been casting around for a \u201cTrump-whisperer\u201d \u2013 someone capable of mediating between an unpredictable White House and an increasingly anxious Europe. Meloni has carefully cultivated that role, and is arguably the closest mainstream European leader to Trump and his imperial court.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">On a personal level, Meloni got off to a good start with Trump. He welcomed her to his Mar-a-Lago estate, hailing her as a \u201cfantastic woman\u201d who has \u201creally taken Europe by storm\u201d, later praising her as an \u201cexceptional leader.\u201d Meloni was the only EU head of government to attend Trump\u2019s inauguration \u2013 a visit she brandished at home as proof of Italy\u2019s renewed clout in Washington. On a visit to the White House in April last year (pictured above), she said her goal was to work together to \u201cmake the west great again\u201d. Unlike other European A-listers, such as Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, she has expressed interest in joining Trump\u2019s Board of Peace.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">More than other European leaders, there is also genuine ideological overlap, for example on immigration, national sovereignty over multilateralism, and opposition to \u201cwoke\u201d ideology.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">\u201cThey have a good relationship based on trust,\u201d said Nicola Procaccini, an MEP for Meloni\u2019s Brothers of Italy party and co-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group. \u201cShe is politically closer to the Republicans and the Trump administration than other leaders, which makes it easier to maintain good relations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">Meloni has previously impressed European allies with her mediation skills, most notably by persuading Hungary\u2019s prime minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n to soften his obstructionist stance at EU summits.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">She also has form when it comes to facilitating dialogue with Washington. She has acknowledged the territory\u2019s strategic importance and argued that Nato should do more to secure the Arctic against hostile actors. Earlier this month she insisted that Trump is not seeking to seize Greenland by force, which she said she \u201cwould not approve of\u201d, but is using \u201cvery assertive methods\u201d to draw attention to US security interests. At an informal European Council on Thursday, Meloni urged calm, while French President Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that the crisis had closed a long era of transatlantic cooperation.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">\u201cIt\u2019s difficult to see how much impact she can really have\u201d, said Raffaele Marchetti, professor of international relations at Rome\u2019s Luiss University. \u201cShe can try to create dialogue. But on various dossiers, the US administration seems to hold very negative views about Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">The Trump administration has shown growing hostility towards liberal European leaders. Last year Vance accused European governments of abandoning democratic values, and leaked internal communications have revealed deep contempt in Trump\u2019s circle for \u201cfreeloading\u201d Europeans. The National Security Strategy (NSS), published in December, claimed that Europe faced \u201ccivilisational erasure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">It is an argument that many on the far-right and populist right like Meloni would echo. Indeed, the NSS praised what it described as \u201cpatriotic\u201d parties in Europe and made clear it wanted to see them succeed.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">The Greenland crisis showed the challenge of being both pro-Trump and \u201cpatriotic\u201d. Other European nationalists such as Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, and Jordan Bardella, leader of France\u2019s National Rally, who had adopted the Maga movement as a common rallying point, issued rare criticism of the US president. Bardella described the tariff threats as \u201cblackmail\u201d and accused Trump of attempting the \u201cvassalisation\u201d of Europe.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">Meloni\u2019s softly-softly approach with Trump has exposed her to criticism at home, where opponents accuse her of appeasement. For Angelo Bonelli, the spokesman for the opposition Green Europe party, Meloni doesn\u2019t have the capacity to move the dial, and is merely seeking to boost her standing domestically.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">\u201cRather than defending a strong and autonomous Europe, she is subjugating herself to the arbitrary will of a self-obsessed leader, who bends peace, global security and international relations to his own grievances and vision of domination,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">Bonelli claimed that Meloni is actually helping Trump pursue a foreign policy objective of sowing division in the EU partly in order to water-down climate, agriculture and digital regulations. The only way out for Europe is to accelerate a unified European defence model, Bonelli said \u2013 a project Meloni has consistently opposed.<\/p>\n<p role=\"text\" tabindex=\"0\" class=\"is_Paragraph font_caslonIonic _dsp-inline _bxs-border-box _ww-break-word _mt-0px _mr-0px _mb-0px _ml-0px _ff-f-family _fw-f-weight-3048 _fs-f-size-18 _lh-f-lineHeigh3500605 _col-c-grey_600 _select-auto _ws-normal\">Allies of the prime minister insist there is little alternative to cultivating ties with Trump.
