EasyJet’s claim that the cost of adding large cabin bags to flight bookings was “from \u00a35.99” has been deemed “misleading” by a regulator. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) determined there was “insufficient evidence” that the price was available “across a range of flight routes and dates”.<\/p>\n

The watchdog has banned the airline<\/a> from using the phrase in marketing materials and instructed it to ensure that future “from” prices for large cabin bags have the lowest price available “across a significant proportion of flights”.<\/p>\n

Large cabin bags are designed to fit in overhead compartments on aircraft.<\/a><\/p>\n

Most budget airlines impose additional charges on passengers for travelling with one of these bags.<\/p>\n

EasyJet<\/a> told the regulator that its advertised price was accurate and obtainable on various routes, though prices fluctuated based on factors including availability, demand and operational costs.<\/p>\n

The airline <\/a>added that the actual price for a specific booking was clearly shown before purchase to maintain transparency.<\/p>\n

The ASA’s decision regarding easyJet comes after an investigation by consumer organisation Which? discovered the price for adding a large cabin bag exceeded \u00a35.99 on all 520 easyJet flights examined.<\/p>\n

The cheapest price identified was \u00a323.49 whilst the average stood at \u00a330.<\/p>\n

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel magazine, said: “It’s frankly astonishing that airlines think they can ignore the rules and mislead customers with unattainable prices, so it’s absolutely right that the ASA has made this ruling against easyJet as a result of our complaint.<\/p>\n

“Our recent investigation found that there is a culture of airlines using low headline fares \u2013 then charging exorbitant prices on top to take a standard cabin bag.<\/p>\n

“The easyJet cabin bag prices we collected were typically five times as much as the ‘from \u00a35.99’ it claimed.<\/p>\n

“When booking a trip, customers should consider choosing an airline without cabin bag add-ons as it may work out cheaper.”<\/p>\n
