Yorkshiremen are known for their plain speaking, common sense talking – and a four-word appraisal from a member of the Leeds United media team to his colleague as we descended the steps from the press box at the top of Hill Dickinson Stadium\u2019s West Stand summed up all you need to know about Everton\u2019s magnificent new home by the banks of the Mersey.<\/p>\n
The web warriors and self-proclaimed wits were out in force earlier on Monday when Leeds\u2019 official account on X<\/a> (formerly Twitter) wrote \u201ca trip to Bramley-Moore Dock<\/a> awaits\u201d alongside a photograph of Hill Dickinson Stadium<\/a>. \u201cBig Tesco\u201d remarked one comedian who should focus on making sure he doesn\u2019t get the trolley with a dodgy wheel rather than going into a career in architecture, while another observer claimed that it looks like it \u201ccould flood any time.\u201d<\/p>\n Thank you for the concern but in fact, the Holderness coastline in East Yorkshire is the fastest-eroding in Europe, so it\u2019s the folk across the Pennines who should be worried in that respect as those holidays in Bridlington might have to be \u2018knocked on\u2019t\u2019ead\u2019. But banter and public bravado apart, when Leeds staff members spoke together about what they\u2019d seen and heard, the verdict was clear.<\/p>\n He looked out and simply said: \u201cThey\u2019ve got it right.\u201d<\/p>\n Of course they have. Unlike this correspondent\u2019s trip to Elland Road to report on Everton\u2019s first game of the season, when I could hardly see any of the other three stands as the low-hanging upper tier above our heads made the viewing experience akin to watching the game through a letter box (or the back of the Lower Bullens at Goodison Park), there isn\u2019t a bad seat in the house among the 52,769 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.<\/p>\n This a modern ground, designed for football and \u2013 as Dan Meis<\/a> said \u2013 providing \u201cthe ultimate homefield advantage.\u201d The noise was there again on Monday night when the action on the pitch inspired it and you can just imagine the racket the Blues supporters would have made if Idrissa Gueye\u2019s<\/a> effort that struck the crossbar had gone in or if substitute Tyler Dibling<\/a> had converted his late opportunity instead of passing the ball.<\/p>\n Another Leeds fan who is a Liverpool-based colleague of mine made his first visit to Everton\u2019s new home for the game and echoed the sentiments. After being there and seeing it with his own eyes, he now believes it\u2019s the best stadium in the country.<\/p>\n Tottenham Hotspur is higher-spec, but as Meis also remarked, he was building \u201ca Ferrari, not a Bentley,\u201d as this would be a high-performance building. Also, rather than being on a north London high street, some 10 miles north of the Houses of Parliament and the other great buildings of the capital by the Thames, Hill Dickinson Stadium is part of Liverpool\u2019s world famous maritime skyline.<\/p>\n It\u2019s the way the Blues are playing, rather than the impressive surroundings that they find themselves in, that is the reason why they\u2019re not winning home matches.<\/p>\n Before anyone gets nostalgic about \u2018The Grand Old Lady\u2019 \u2013 another Leeds fan claimed Hill Dickinson Stadium was \u201csterile\u201d and they\u2019d have lost this game had it been played at Goodison Park \u2013 the fact is that Everton won just five league games there in their historic final season, the joint lowest total in their history along with 1957-58.<\/p>\n
