{"id":725812,"date":"2026-01-28T06:47:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/725812\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T06:47:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:47:15","slug":"will-the-mother-of-all-deals-paper-over-the-cracks-between-europe-and-india-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/725812\/","title":{"rendered":"Will the \u2018mother of all deals\u2019 paper over the cracks between Europe and India? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\">European Union\u2019s<\/a> trade deal with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/india\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/india\"> India<\/a> is, as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\"> Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> trumpeted on Tuesday, \u201cthe mother of all deals\u201d, creating a free-trade zone of two billion people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tariffs on 99.5 per cent of goods from India to the EU and 96.6 per cent of European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/eu-trade-deal-set-to-be-a-boon-to-india-manufacturing-but-agriculture-not-included\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/eu-trade-deal-set-to-be-a-boon-to-india-manufacturing-but-agriculture-not-included\/\">goods exports to India will be eliminated or reduced.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have sent a signal to the world that rules-based co-operation still delivers great outcomes,\u201d von der Leyen said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Brussels and New Delhi have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/eu-and-india-clinch-mother-of-all-trade-deals-in-rebuff-to-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/27\/eu-and-india-clinch-mother-of-all-trade-deals-in-rebuff-to-trump\/\">negotiating the deal<\/a> for nearly 20 years, albeit with long interruptions, but sealing it has taken on a new importance for both sides since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> return to the White House last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Previous US administrations regarded the EU and India as almost indispensable allies, but Trump has humiliated both and incentivised them to reduce their dependence on Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Indian prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/narendra-modi\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/narendra-modi\">Narendra Modi <\/a>used to be close to Trump and he was among the first leaders to visit the White House after the US president\u2019s inauguration last year. But their relationship soured last May when Modi publicly contradicted Trump\u2019s claim to have mediated the end to an armed conflict between India and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pakistan\">Pakistan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since then, the US has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, 25 per cent of which was in protest against India\u2019s continued import of Russian oil and gas. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent this week accused the EU of hypocrisy because it declined to follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/24\/trump-threatens-canada-with-100-tariffs-if-it-makes-trade-deal-with-china\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/24\/trump-threatens-canada-with-100-tariffs-if-it-makes-trade-deal-with-china\/\">US lead in sanctioning India.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have put 25 per cent tariffs on India for buying Russian oil. Guess what happened last week? The Europeans signed a trade deal with India,\u201d he said, adding that the Europeans were financing a war against themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a joint statement following the signing of the trade deal, the EU and India expressed concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine and said they would support efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But when EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that India should put pressure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\">Russia<\/a>, foreign minister Vikram Misri made clear that New Delhi was not going to budge from its long-standing friendship with Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere is a historical context for that. I don\u2019t think we have time to dilate on that. But these are two things that stand on their own and that go forward on their own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Where the EU and India appeared to agree was on Trump\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/23\/trump-rescinds-canadas-invitation-to-join-his-board-of-peace\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2026\/01\/23\/trump-rescinds-canadas-invitation-to-join-his-board-of-peace\/\"> \u2018Board of Peace<\/a>\u2018, which neither of them is in any hurry to join. In their joint statement, they suggested that the board should stick to its original remit, as authorised by the United Nations Security Council, to oversee the peace process in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> \u201cThey encouraged all parties to implement the resolution in its entirety, in line with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cBoth sides restated their readiness to support efforts towards just and durable peace and stressed the need for unhindered humanitarian access.
