Invincible Ibis<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 1<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> Mark Newnham<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 91<br \/><strong>Record:<\/strong> 7:4-2-1<\/p>\n<p>Remains the clear top pick after an authoritative mile win that reinforced his class and composure. He continues to do everything right at the right time.<\/p>\n<p>Has won four straight with improvement to come and nothing so far suggests he won\u2019t handle the step up in distance as the Derby picture becomes clearer.<\/p>\n<p>Hugh Bowman seems the right fit for a horse that likes to settle and then unleash with one sweeping run. Does that riding pattern limit him in a Derby that is always tactical?<\/p>\n<p>2. Sagacious Life<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> <\/strong>2<br \/><strong><strong>Tr<\/strong>ainer:<\/strong> Pierre Ng<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 97<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 3:2-0-0<br \/><strong><strong>Previous Name:<\/strong> <\/strong>Navio Fantasma<\/p>\n<p>Zac Purton\u2019s Classic Mile decision has locked him into the conversation at the very top. His mount brings the highest rating and proven mile through mile-and-a-half performances into the series. <\/p>\n<p>The question marks are Brazilian form \u2013\u00a0no South American import has ever seriously challenged in the Derby \u2013\u00a0and the fact Sagacious Life is listed as a roarer. Little Paradise<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> <\/strong>3<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> Jimmy Ting<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 95<br \/><strong>Record:<\/strong> 8:5-1-1<\/p>\n<p>A polished, progressive Hong Kong performer who keeps winning and doing it with authority. His most recent win at 1400m again showed a tactical versatility he is going to need as the distances progress.<\/p>\n<p>The mile-plus question still lingers, but his class and consistency keeps him firmly inside the top tier.<\/p>\n<p>4. Numbers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 4<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> Frankie Lor<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 90<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 2:1-0-1<br \/><strong>Previous Name:<\/strong> King Of Thunder<\/p>\n<p>One of the few genuine stayers in the rankings, with proven form at longer trips overseas. He may lack the brilliance of some above him, but his stamina and ability to grind on-pace could become increasingly valuable. <\/p>\n<p>A strong recent trial over 1600m showed he is holding form and fitness. Trainer Frankie Lor has opted to skip the Classic Mile in favour of the G3 Centenary Vase on February 8 and then the Classic Cup.<\/p>\n<p>5. Patch Of Cosmo (NEW)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> Unranked<strong><br \/><strong>Tr<\/strong>ainer:<\/strong> Manfred Man<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 84<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 12:5-0-0<\/p>\n<p>Counted out by experts in the first two ballots, Patch of Cosmo made an incredible return after 300-plus days on the sidelines with a tendon injury to win at a mile, carrying 135lb in Class 3.<\/p>\n<p>Now there is the danger of a second-up \u2018bounce\u2019 \u2013 especially with just a two-week gap into the Classic Mile \u2013 but he is an intriguing new contender based on his undeniable class and upside.<\/p>\n<p>6. Dazzling Fit (\u2193)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 5<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> David Eustace<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 75<br \/><strong>Record:<\/strong> 9:3-1-1<\/p>\n<p>A solid, reliable type who continues to hold his ground against strong opposition. His toughness and race fitness are clear assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David Eustace gambled by not pushing for a Classic Mile spot \u2013\u00a0putting his horse\u2019s long-term future first. Top Dragon (\u2193)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 6<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> Chris So<br \/><strong>Rating: <\/strong>81<br \/><strong>Record:<\/strong> 11:3-3-2<\/p>\n<p>Consistent and well exposed at this level, with form tying in neatly with several around him, including third behind Sagacious Life last start. Rarely runs a bad race.<\/p>\n<p>The question is whether he has another level when the pressure rises.<\/p>\n<p>8. Beauty Bolt (\u2193)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 7<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> Tony Cruz<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 85<br \/><strong>Record:<\/strong> 7:2-3-1<br \/><strong>Previous Name:<\/strong> Thunder Song<\/p>\n<p>Has quietly built a strong body of Hong Kong form. Was only a neck behind top ranked Invincible Ibis last start when in receipt of just one pound.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still knocking on the door without forcing a rankings jump just yet \u2013\u00a0the Classic Mile, where he will be ridden by James McDonald and gets the opportunity to show his toughness and tactical versatility, is his chance.<\/p>\n<p>9. Public Attention (\u2193)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 8<br \/><strong>Trainer:<\/strong> David Hayes<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 83<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 3:0-1-1<br \/><strong>Previous Name: <\/strong>Public Attention<\/p>\n<p>Winless so far in Hong Kong but his overseas form points to genuine class.<\/p>\n<p>Stuck wide last start and showed some toughness. There\u2019s scope for improvement if he sharpens tactically. Has trialled since the first-up run into Sunday\u2019s Classic Mile.<\/p>\n<p>11. Infinite Resolve (\u2191)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 12<strong><br \/><strong>Tr<\/strong>ainer:<\/strong> Mark Newnham<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 84<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 8:1-3-2<br \/><strong><strong>Previous Name:<\/strong> <\/strong>Deconstruction<\/p>\n<p>A progressive type who took a step forward when stretched out to 1400m behind Little Paradise. His late work last start was encouraging and he profiles as a horse still on the way up. Runs in Sunday\u2019s Classic Mile.<\/p>\n<p>12. Glittering Legend (\u2193)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous Ranking:<\/strong> 10<strong><br \/><strong>Tr<\/strong>ainer:<\/strong> David Eustace<br \/><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 78<br \/><strong>HK Record:<\/strong> 1:0-0-0<br \/><strong><strong>Previous Name:<\/strong> <\/strong>Glittering Legend<\/p>\n<p>Has the right kind of overseas form to compete in the Derby but has struggled to acclimatise judging by his only run so far. The clock is ticking fast on him finding form in time for the big one.<\/p>\n<p>13.
