Ukrainian defense forces struck a\u00a0Russian air defense asset in\u00a0temporarily occupied Crimea overnight on\u00a0January 27, as\u00a0part of\u00a0broader efforts to\u00a0degrade Russia\u2019s offensive military capabilities, according to\u00a0the General Staff of\u00a0the Armed Forces of\u00a0Ukraine on\u00a0January\u00a027.<\/p>\n

The military said<\/a> the strike targeted a\u00a0Tor-M2 short-range surface-to-air missile system near the settlement of\u00a0Kacha.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the General Staff, the Tor-M2 system was being used to\u00a0protect Russian military facilities and troop concentrations, as\u00a0well as\u00a0to\u00a0counter Ukrainian aerial threats in\u00a0the area.<\/p>\n

The Tor-M2, a\u00a0modern short-range air defense system, is\u00a0estimated to\u00a0cost around $25 million per unit and is\u00a0a\u00a0key component of\u00a0Russia\u2019s layered air defense network, particularly in\u00a0occupied territories.<\/p>\n

Ukrainian officials said the extent of\u00a0damage inflicted on\u00a0the Russian system is\u00a0still being assessed.<\/p>\n

Previously, reports emerged that targeted long-range strikes throughout 2025, conducted<\/a> by\u00a0Ukrainian special operations units, destroyed or\u00a0disabled Russian air defense systems worth an\u00a0estimated $4 billion.<\/p>\n

The operations were conducted by\u00a0the SBU\u2019s Center for Special Operations \u201cAlpha,\u201d which, according to\u00a0the agency, systematically targeted key elements of\u00a0Russia\u2019s layered air defense network over the course of\u00a0the year.<\/p>\n

The SBU reported confirmed destruction of\u00a0several types of\u00a0Russian surface-to-air missile systems, including the S-300, S-350, and S-400 platforms. Other systems reportedly neutralized included Buk-M1 and Buk-M2 launchers, Pantsir-S1 and Pantsir-S2 combined missile-artillery systems, as\u00a0well as\u00a0Tor-M1, Tor-M2, and Tor-M3 short-range air defense units.<\/p>\n
