{"id":726481,"date":"2026-01-28T14:13:24","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T14:13:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/726481\/"},"modified":"2026-01-28T14:13:24","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T14:13:24","slug":"russian-state-tv-host-famed-ballet-dancer-hit-by-new-eu-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/726481\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian State TV Host, Famed Ballet Dancer Hit By New EU Sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Several of Russia\u2019s most prominent TV personalities, including Pavel Zarubin, a state TV reporter known for fawning reporting on &#8212; and nearly unfettered access to &#8212; President Vladimir Putin, were targeted in the European Union&#8217;s newest package of sanctions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The proposed measures were adopted by the European Council &#8212; the bloc&#8217;s executive body &#8212; on January 28 at a meeting of EU ambassadors. EU members that have typically been wary of provoking Moscow &#8212; Hungary and Slovakia &#8212; did not block the measures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Since Russia\u2019s all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/eu-solidarity-ukraine\/eu-sanctions-against-russia-following-invasion-ukraine\/sanctions-against-individuals-companies-and-organisations_en\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wsw__a\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the EU has steadily expanded its list of targets it has hit with asset freezes or visa bans<\/strong><\/a>. The list now encompasses more than 2,500 individuals, companies, and other entities, with some 28 billion euros ($33 billion) in assets frozen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start;\">The new measures fall under a different rubric linked not specifically to the Ukraine war but more broadly to \u201cRussia\u2019s destabilizing activities.\u201d Around 60 people and entities have been hit so far under this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Zarubin, who could not be immediately reached for comment, is a longtime TV reporter with Channel One, Russia\u2019s largest state-owned TV network. The EU measure calls him \u201ca prominent Russian propagandist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yekaterina Andreyeva, another prominent state TV host, and Sergei Polunin, a renowned ballet dancer and the former principal at the Royal Ballet in London, were also hit with sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/eu-russia-sanctions-zarubin-polunin-ukraine\/33649632.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"wsw__a\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Other figures on the list <\/strong><\/a>include Roman Chumakov, a rapper known as Zhigan who writes and performs songs praising Putin; Maria Sittel, another TV anchorwoman on Channel One; and Dmitry Guberniyev, a popular TV sports commentator.<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s sanctions on Russia have frequently, though not always, been enacted in coordination with Western allies, including the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: start;\">In Washington, new legislation called the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 has gotten the green light from US President Donald Trump for passage.
