She said a $53 billion postwar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/03\/04\/arab-summit-egypt-alternative-trump-gaza-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/03\/04\/arab-summit-egypt-alternative-trump-gaza-plan\/\">reconstruction proposal<\/a> for Gaza adopted by the Arab League was \u201cmore realistic and acceptable\u201d than plans for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/01\/22\/what-is-in-jared-kushners-new-gaza-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/01\/22\/what-is-in-jared-kushners-new-gaza-proposal\/\">New Gaza<\/a> under US President Donald Trump&#8217;s 20-point peace plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-JIET6LLIHFAG3PPVEJ54BNIC4M\">Mr Trump&#8217;s son-in-law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/10\/10\/jared-kushner-gaza-peace-deal-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/10\/10\/jared-kushner-gaza-peace-deal-trump\/\">Jared Kushner<\/a>, outlined plans for Gaza&#8217;s reconstruction at the World Economic Forum in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/davos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/davos\/\">Davos<\/a> last week. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/01\/22\/what-is-in-jared-kushners-new-gaza-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2026\/01\/22\/what-is-in-jared-kushners-new-gaza-proposal\/\">redevelopment project<\/a> included artist renderings of a completely reconstructed enclave, replete with skyscrapers and glitzy apartment buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-2MSJ4JMTJBEAZELU4MJJICEQRY\">The presentation came after Mr Trump unveiled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/trump-davos-2026-world-economic-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/trump-davos-2026-world-economic-forum\/\">Board of Peace<\/a> at the annual summit with leaders and representatives of countries that had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/donald-trumps-board-of-peace-who-has-joined-and-who-will-lead-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/donald-trumps-board-of-peace-who-has-joined-and-who-will-lead-it\/\">signed up<\/a>. The diplomatic initiative has responsibility for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/21\/palestinians-frozen-out-of-donald-trumps-board-of-peace-officials-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/21\/palestinians-frozen-out-of-donald-trumps-board-of-peace-officials-say\/\">overseeing Gaza&#8217;s peace plan<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-AEO2R223GFCDDHWWFGSUQGJT5Q\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/20\/macron-launches-attack-on-trumps-world-without-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/20\/macron-launches-attack-on-trumps-world-without-rules\/\">Mr Macron<\/a> promptly declined Mr Trump&#8217;s invitation to join, saying that the board&#8217;s charter appeared to contradict UN principles. In response, Mr Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/frances-viral-plan-to-take-on-trump-with-pithy-social-media-blitz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/2026\/01\/21\/frances-viral-plan-to-take-on-trump-with-pithy-social-media-blitz\/\">mocked the French leader<\/a> and threatened a 200 per cent tariff on French goods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-5AFRDOEX3VADHASDZBQ3TPX6AM\">\u201cI don&#8217;t understand this Board of Peace. It&#8217;s very weird, but if it can help peacefully rebuild Gaza, I&#8217;m OK with it,\u201d said Ms Lakrafi. \u201cWe are not dreaming of creating a new &#8216;New York&#8217;, we simply want to help rebuild Gaza with partners who are really concerned about its future,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p><b>Next steps<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-ODQ3V2DFA5EI3CADDPJDOCIYUU\">France has one clear priority, the MP told The National, \u201cto protect civilians everywhere and provide support with humanitarian aid\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-PKM2AGD46FEEVOQNGW24OROJA4\">It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2025\/09\/19\/france-and-nine-other-states-to-recognise-palestinian-statehood-as-landmark-un-conference-looms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2025\/09\/19\/france-and-nine-other-states-to-recognise-palestinian-statehood-as-landmark-un-conference-looms\/\">recognised<\/a> the state of Palestine in a historic move in September on the sidelines of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/09\/15\/un-general-assembly-2025-schedule-trump-gaza-al-shara-new-york\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/09\/15\/un-general-assembly-2025-schedule-trump-gaza-al-shara-new-york\/\">UN General Assembly<\/a> in New York, urging other nations to follow suit. Canada, Australia, the UK, Portugal, Belgium, Malta, Luxembourg, San Marino and Andorra all made similar announcements in a collective effort to revive momentum for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/16\/israels-assault-on-gaza-cannot-wipe-out-two-state-solution-says-french-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/16\/israels-assault-on-gaza-cannot-wipe-out-two-state-solution-says-french-presidency\/\">two-state solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-XZG7C6MQPBHMTBLXONEVKQM7W4\">\u201cThis is the oldest conflict in the world,\u201d said Ms Lakrafi. \u201cI think we can all agree that enough is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-VBNAUYBVS5HJDI3Q4NDNAHNVFA\">A crucial next step for Palestine so that it will receive wider recognition and support is to hold free and transparent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/10\/03\/mahmoud-abbas-says-elections-would-be-held-within-a-year-of-gaza-wars-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/10\/03\/mahmoud-abbas-says-elections-would-be-held-within-a-year-of-gaza-wars-end\/\">elections<\/a> this year, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-7E2QX4FARZFUTGW4BWZBQ4DEUU\">In her capacity as head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF), an international organisation with 99 parliamentary representatives, Ms Lakrafi has proposed organising and observing upcoming elections in Palestine. She said her proposal has been welcomed by the Palestinian Authority and received backing from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/05\/17\/leaders-arrive-for-arab-league-summit-with-gaza-on-top-of-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/05\/17\/leaders-arrive-for-arab-league-summit-with-gaza-on-top-of-agenda\/\">Arab League<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-RKPLLITNF5D2JNN47XKPCPLYXI\">\u201cIf you have a President and MPs who are legally elected, it would be more helpful for Palestine to be part of the UN, and for more countries to recognise it and eventually receive more support,\u201d she told The National. <\/p>\n<p><b>Lebanon and Syria<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-21-AQDB7WHITBELFME3J4FYVQZL4U\">France is also hosting an international conference to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/23\/lebanon-army-chief-accuses-israel-of-spreading-misinformation-to-undermine-his-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/12\/23\/lebanon-army-chief-accuses-israel-of-spreading-misinformation-to-undermine-his-troops\/\">Lebanese army<\/a> in March, which is currently carrying out the sensitive task of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/12\/09\/us-bill-links-lebanese-army-aid-to-hezbollah-disarmament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/us\/2025\/12\/09\/us-bill-links-lebanese-army-aid-to-hezbollah-disarmament\/\">disarming Hezbollah<\/a> in southern Lebanon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-56GCNIZLOVBZHNP3PKXX2IZWZ4\">Hosted by Mr Macron in Paris, the conference will be the first major fund-raising effort for the Lebanese army and security forces since 2024. Salaries in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/01\/23\/lebanons-prime-minister-nawaf-salam-set-for-talks-in-paris-over-security-forces-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/europe\/2026\/01\/23\/lebanons-prime-minister-nawaf-salam-set-for-talks-in-paris-over-security-forces-support\/\">Lebanese military<\/a> have fallen significantly since the onset of one of the country&#8217;s worst economic crises in 2019, leaving services heavily reliant on foreign aid. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-LILFHHKDG5AERD4VHO2ALFMT7E\">\u201cOur relationship with Lebanon is very old and very deep. We are very close to that country,\u201d said Ms Lakrafi. \u201cWe have been committed to helping them since the start, so we cannot stop in the middle of the road now,\u201d she continued, adding that the region \u201cneeds the Lebanese army to be stable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-W3KHS4EU3NBLBIVETRKOCL4V3Y\">Meanwhile, in neighbouring Syria, where fear and anxiety dominate in what remains of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/17\/syrias-al-shara-recognises-kurdish-citizenship-language-and-nowruz-festival-in-presidential-decree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/17\/syrias-al-shara-recognises-kurdish-citizenship-language-and-nowruz-festival-in-presidential-decree\/\">Kurdish-led territory<\/a>, France is being increasingly viewed as a more reliable defender than the US. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-AGTODV6OVZAGLKULKLSW6UI3YA\">Damascus launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/21\/diplomatic-rush-over-syria-intensifies-to-avert-ceasefire-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2026\/01\/21\/diplomatic-rush-over-syria-intensifies-to-avert-ceasefire-collapse\/\">swift offensive<\/a> against the Syrian Democratic Forces after months of stalled talks between the Kurdish-led group and the central government over integration into the Syrian state. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-V7UVB7AYLVETFBJ6AZT3VBJG7U\">For years, the SDF were the main ground partner in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/podcasts\/beyond-the-headlines\/2026\/01\/02\/how-serious-is-the-isis-threat-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/podcasts\/beyond-the-headlines\/2026\/01\/02\/how-serious-is-the-isis-threat-in-syria\/\">defeating ISIS<\/a> in Syria, fighting its forces and guarding prisons holding more than 10,000 combatants, but US support for the SDF has waned. Earlier this month, US envoy Tom Barrack said the original purpose of the SDF had \u201clargely expired\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-28-T4AVHXPXDNCBBGE2XBFLDTXOKQ\">\u201cWe are deeply concerned about Syria&#8217;s Kurds,\u201d said Ms Lakrafi. \u201cI know that we are talking with them and that we have to stand by them. They helped a lot in the fight against ISIS, and we need to support them,\u201d she told The National. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-O55PDXILVVE3LBLW3H6C6IGRDE\">Meanwhile, Paris is also in talks with Mr Al Shara on the fate of the Kurds and other minorities in the country, said the MP. \u201cHe&#8217;s in charge, so we have to talk to him. We talk with everyone.
