{"id":72862,"date":"2025-05-04T03:50:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T03:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/72862\/"},"modified":"2025-05-04T03:50:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T03:50:08","slug":"state-pensioners-born-before-this-year-get-instant-100-winter-fuel-payment-increase-personal-finance-finance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/72862\/","title":{"rendered":"State pensioners born before this year get instant \u00a3100 winter fuel payment increase | Personal Finance | Finance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">As many will know by now, millions of state pensioners are losing their \u00a3300 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/winter-fuel-payment\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment<\/a> if they no longer claim a qualifying benefit, after the government&#8217;s decision to switch the payment to being means tested instead of universal.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">But what many don\u2019t realise is that even if you do qualify for the <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/winter-fuel-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment<\/a> this year, the exact amount you can get will change depending on the year you were born, and possibly on other circumstances too.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/winter-fuel-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment<\/a> used to be paid automatically to all state pensioners but from now on, you need to be claiming a qualifying benefit such as Pension Credit, after the government changed the rules.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/state-pension\" data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|AutoLink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state pension<\/a> age but aged under 80, so born on or before September 22, 1958 and qualify will get a \u00a3200 payment, whereas those aged over 80 &#8211; so born September 22, 1944 or earlier &#8211; will get \u00a3300.<\/p>\n<p>The amount you get is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 15 and 21, 2025. This is called the \u2018qualifying week\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This means that if you are aged over 80 and qualify, your <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/winter-fuel-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment<\/a> will be increased from \u00a3200 to \u00a3300.<\/p>\n<p>Most people who qualify will get a letter telling you how much you\u2019ll get and which bank account this will be paid into &#8211; which is usually the same as your Pension Credit or other benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Age UK said: \u201cIf you or your partner claims Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the payment should go to the main claimant of the benefit automatically.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;ve never received a <a data-link-tracking=\"InArticle|Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/latest\/winter-fuel-payment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter fuel payment<\/a> before, or if you claim Universal Credit, you might need to make a claim. And if you receive Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit, you must make a claim.<\/p>\n<p data-mce-linkchecker-status=\"valid\">\u201cYou should receive your payment between mid-November and Christmas.
