{"id":728949,"date":"2026-01-29T16:38:16","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/728949\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T16:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T16:38:16","slug":"argu-studio-adds-pretpec-annexe-to-coastal-croatian-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/728949\/","title":{"rendered":"Argu Studio adds Pretpec annexe to coastal Croatian home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stone<\/a> cladding and a glazed corner define Pretpec, a compact guest annexe created for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">house<\/a> on the Croatian coast by Zagreb architecture practice Argu Studio.<\/p>\n<p>Located on the Pelje\u0161ac peninsula, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/guesthouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guesthouse<\/a> occupies the 34-square-metre footprint of what was originally a small summer kitchen, locally known as a Pretpec, within a lush garden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.argu.hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Argu Studio<\/a> chose to make the new annexe the same compact size, a decision founder Marko Gusi\u0107 describes as a critique of &#8220;uncontrolled development&#8221; in the area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291227 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/argu-studio-pretpec-annexe-croatia_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Pretpec guesthouse in Croatia\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Argu Studio has completed a guest annexe for a coastal home in Croatia<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than pursuing spatial expansion, the architecture works with the existing scale and spatial logic of the inherited structure, relying on a lifestyle where daily activities happen primarily outdoors,&#8221; Gusi\u0107 told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project demonstrates that spatial quality does not come from floor area, but from precise organisation and a clear relationship to climate and landscape,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In doing so, the house positions itself as a critique of uncontrolled coastal<b> <\/b>development and the loss of spatial measure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291228 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/argu-studio-pretpec-annexe-croatia_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Stone-clad exterior of home by ARGU Studio\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Stone was used to clad the dwelling&#8217;s exterior<\/p>\n<p>The rough, rocky exterior of Pretpec is contrasted by a full-height glazed corner, which gives its main living space expansive views across an external dining and cooking terrace, and the garden and sea beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the annexe&#8217;s living space is organised around a historic, freestanding hearth that was sourced from the main home. This is overlooked by a sleeping mezzanine that sits on a timber wall with built-in storage, a small kitchenette and a bathroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2291236 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/argu-studio-pretpec-annexe-croatia_dezeen_2364_col_12-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior view of Pretpec by ARGU Studio\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>It replaces a summer kitchen that formerly occupied the site<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With no possibility of expansion, the space is differentiated vertically through subtle sectional adjustments and the introduction of a gallery,&#8221; Gusi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large built-in volume anchors the interior, integrating the kitchen, storage, technical areas, and vertical circulation. Gusi\u0107 explained.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The remote location and limited availability of craftsmen resulted in minor material imperfections, accepted as a direct consequence of building under specific local conditions and reinforcing the project\u2019s relationship to place, process, and constraint,&#8221;
