{"id":729014,"date":"2026-01-29T17:19:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T17:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/729014\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T17:19:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T17:19:18","slug":"university-of-manchester-mathematicians-appointed-as-fellows-of-new-national-academy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/729014\/","title":{"rendered":"University of Manchester mathematicians appointed as Fellows of new National Academy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">Four researchers from\u00a0the Faculty of Science and Engineering\u00a0(FSE)\u00a0have been appointed as inaugural Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, a new national body\u00a0established\u00a0to bring\u00a0together the UK\u2019s strongest mathematicians to help solve some of the UK\u2019s biggest challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">The appointments place Manchester researchers among a cohort of\u00a0around\u00a0100\u00a0Fellows drawn from academia,\u00a0business,\u00a0industry\u00a0and government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">The Academy\u2019s Fellowship will work collectively to address major national challenges including pandemic preparedness, economic transformation, national security, climate\u00a0change\u00a0and the safe development of artificial intelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">The Fellows will continue to perform their roles\u00a0at Manchester and at\u00a0the\u00a0other institutions they\u00a0support,\u00a0but\u00a0will come together through the convening power of the Academy to help\u00a0benefit\u00a0the whole UK. Areas of focus will\u00a0likely include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e9e5e2cd17abafb3ffe766842aceaf5e8\">Working with experts across government, industry and the third sector to model the impact of climate change and advise on mitigations<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e5f75c0f3e169cdcd3f3525fcec05b83d\">Supporting cross-disciplinary modelling to prepare for future diseases and pandemics<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e1fd75fa0384254b7ae45046496160af0\">Developing and championing investment in the new mathematics\u00a0required\u00a0for ensuring AI and the quantum technologies of tomorrow work safely and to the benefit of all<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e21aee3e68737ebc067969ae94e46babc\">Bringing together industry,\u00a0academia\u00a0and educators to design maths curricula fit for tomorrow&#8217;s economy and society<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e3b7763692f2c6543b9df137245fcfba4\">Keeping the UK safe through advances in cryptography and the mathematical foundations of national security<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eea533e2e89322659d0163b98b001ac7f\">Guiding the UK&#8217;s green energy transition, advising on everything from grid capacity and system resilience to safe, large-scale energy storage<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"ea49072674c146745f645440a1b702019\">Helping businesses and entrepreneurs harness mathematics to drive innovation, new\u00a0products\u00a0and sustainable growth<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e9a57f2e968aa05412fe6dfdd87fc5043\">Strengthening national resilience by using mathematics to optimise infrastructure, improve public services and forecast risks\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\">The four Manchester appointees are:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/paul.glendinning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Professor Paul Glendinning<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0FRSE, FIMA\u00a0and\u00a0Beyer Professor of Applied Mathematics, whose research focuses on applied dynamical systems, particularly piecewise smooth systems. A former President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), Professor Glendinning has played a leading role in shaping the UK mathematical community and was\u00a0closely involved\u00a0in the design of Manchester\u2019s Alan Turing Building.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/ian.hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Professor Ian Hall OBE<\/strong><\/a>, Professor of Mathematical Epidemiology and Statistics and Director of the Christabel Pankhurst Institute for health technology research and innovation. Professor Hall previously led modelling work at Public Health England and played key advisory roles\u00a0as part of Department of Health and Social Care&#8217;s scientific pandemic influenza modelling subgroup (SPI-M), as the academic chair of the Social Care Working Group for SAGE and by supporting UKHSA Joint Modelling team and advising the Ministry of Justice. He was awarded an OBE in 2024 for services to public health, specifically epidemiology and adult social care during Covid-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0px;text-align:left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.manchester.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/mark.kambites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Professor Mark Kambites<\/strong><\/a>, Professor of Pure Mathematics,\u00a0whose research focuses on\u00a0semigroup theory and its connections to\u00a0areas such as\u00a0theoretical computer science,\u00a0tropical\u00a0geometry\u00a0and\u00a0geometric group theory.
