{"id":72943,"date":"2025-05-04T04:33:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T04:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/72943\/"},"modified":"2025-05-04T04:33:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T04:33:22","slug":"germanys-foreign-ministry-hit-back-at-marco-rubio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/72943\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany\u2019s foreign ministry hit back at Marco Rubio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany\u2019s foreign ministry<\/a> hit back at U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio after he criticized the decision to classify <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-afd-election-migration-weidel-53ed34f57556ad394c53868726d47194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Alternative for Germany party<\/a> as a \u201cright-wing extremist\u201d organization.<\/p>\n<p>The spat deepened Friday to embroil the foreign office, Rubio, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/jd-vance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Vice President JD Vance<\/a> and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/elon-musk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tech billionaire Elon Musk<\/a>. It also occurred at a complicated time for Germany \u2014 just days before the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and Nazi Germany\u2019s unconditional capitulation.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-new-government-merz-social-democrats-coalition-7bd1e750dfb15411e78a3614bd54b87c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a coalition deal<\/a> between the center-right and center-left parties was just approved, and now parliament is set to vote next week to elect <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-government-merz-profile-e43537745f4ed302621f67e4cda59cfe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conservative leader Friedrich Merz<\/a> as the country\u2019s new chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>Merz has not commented publicly on the intelligence service\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Oleksii Makeiev, Ukraine\u2019s ambassador to Germany, told German news agency dpa that he\u2019s concerned about AfD\u2019s ties to Russia in light of the classification.<\/p>\n<p>AfD has long <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-afd-parliament-china-russia-9d837d9b14edc6edcaec421b0ac7ac60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">faced criticism for Russia-friendly positions<\/a>, and opposes Germany\u2019s stance toward <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the war in Ukraine<\/a>. Berlin is Ukraine\u2019s second-biggest <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-ukraine-military-aid-financing-budget-446f7e13ad9cc352fc0a22262e5486d4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weapons supplier<\/a> after the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Disregards human dignity\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution described the party, known as AfD, as a threat to the country\u2019s democratic order, saying it <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-far-right-afd-intelligence-extremism-court-50728dd01da83efd26cb22fa4eefbfc5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cdisregards human dignity\u201d<\/a> \u2014 in particular by what it called \u201congoing agitation\u201d against refugees and migrants.<\/p>\n<p>The German domestic intelligence service\u2019s move to classify the AfD, which placed <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-election-merz-scholz-far-right-afd-ebf16ed38e0beaff7fed9a6d29b32a24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second in national elections<\/a> in February, as a right-wing extremist group means its officials can now use informants and other tools such as audio and video recordings to monitor its activities nationwide. <\/p>\n<p>But it also risks fueling the party\u2019s claims of political persecution. Far-right parties have been gaining ground across Europe and the AfD attracts international attention, including support from Musk, who is a close ally of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. President Donald Trump.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla on Friday condemned the move as \u201ca severe blow to German democracy,\u201d given that the party has grown into one of the country\u2019s most popular political forces. They alleged that it was politically motivated, a claim the government denies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AfD will continue to legally defend itself against these democracy-endangering defamations,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>AfD\u2019s second-place finish during the elections cemented the party\u2019s status as <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/germany-election-updates-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a factor that other politicians can\u2019t ignore<\/a>, but <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-election-far-right-afd-firewall-6e4143a2be1c93126749c8f158b5fe12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the so-called \u201cfirewall,\u201d<\/a> which mainstream German political parties have against working with far-right parties, has held.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio and Vance take to X<\/p>\n<p>In his post on Friday, <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/marco-rubio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rubio<\/a> called on Germany to undo the classification.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That\u2019s not democracy \u2014 it\u2019s tyranny in disguise,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhat is truly extremist is not the popular AfD \u2014 which took second in the recent election \u2014 but rather the establishment\u2019s deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes. Germany should reverse course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foreign ministry wrote \u201cthis is democracy\u201d in a post that replied directly to Rubio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis decision is the result of a thorough &amp; independent investigation to protect our Constitution &amp; the rule of law,\u201d the foreign office wrote late Friday. \u201cIt is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vice-president-vance-travel-europe-india-greenland-fa3297665373eefe988f552ca0e0e51a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vance<\/a>, meanwhile, referenced the Cold War in his post on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AfD is the most popular party in Germany, and by far the most representative of East Germany. Now the bureaucrats try to destroy it,\u201d Vance wrote. \u201cThe West tore down the Berlin Wall together. And it has been rebuilt \u2014 not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk, who owns X, re-posted Vance\u2019s comments and added, \u201cfate loves irony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump inner circle\u2019s history with the AfD<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-munich-vance-free-speech-election-33e720b820e61db9d5e478e63b4a4dc7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vance met with Weidel in February<\/a>, nine days before the national election, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. He assailed the firewall in a speech to the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo many of us on the other side of the Atlantic, it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don\u2019t like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion or, God forbid, vote a different way, or even worse, win an election,\u201d he told the audience.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-elon-musk-afd-alice-weidel-521a8fb77250ee0f354fa4e76c1ce63d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Musk has supported the AfD for months<\/a>, including a chat with Weidel that he livestreamed on X earlier this year to amplify the party\u2019s message.
