{"id":729602,"date":"2026-01-29T23:30:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T23:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/729602\/"},"modified":"2026-01-29T23:30:22","modified_gmt":"2026-01-29T23:30:22","slug":"london-hospitals-spent-nearly-350000-on-colourful-thank-you-signs-during-pandemic-while-thousands-died-in-their-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/729602\/","title":{"rendered":"London hospitals spent nearly \u00a3350,000 on colourful &#8216;thank you&#8217; signs during pandemic while thousands died in their care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Two\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/london\/index.html\" id=\"mol-d568d920-f4bd-11f0-a247-a583ccc30c57\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">London<\/a>\u00a0NHS trusts spent nearly \u00a3350,000 on colourful signs in the middle of the pandemic while thousands of patients died with Covid in their hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The self-congratulatory signs\u00a0cost a combined total of \u00a3345,142.41 and were put up as part of a recruitment push by King&#8217;s College <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/nhs\/index.html\" id=\"mol-c9784b70-f4d9-11f0-a247-a583ccc30c57\" class=\"class\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> Trust and South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in November 2021, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request lodged by the Daily Mail revealed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While these signs were being <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9425391\/More-fifth-Covid-victims-English-hospitals-contracted-disease-wards.html\" rel=\"noopener\">prepared and installed<\/a>, 1,625 patients died with Covid at King&#8217;s College Trust hospitals from the beginning of the pandemic until March 2023, official government data shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">King&#8217;s College Hospital also had \u00a3735million of debt written off by the government in 2020 just before the pandemic, after its finances were in a &#8216;precarious state&#8217;,\u00a0<a class=\"class\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hansard.parliament.uk\/commons\/2021-12-03\/debates\/D7172740-05A8-473A-98B4-A8244F763D3C\/KingSCollegeHospitalCovid-19Recovery\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Mrs Hayes told the Commons in December 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">John O&#8217;Connell, CEO of the TaxPayers&#8217; Alliance said: &#8216;This is a shocking example of how warped spending priorities became during the pandemic, with taxpayers&#8217; money diverted into vanity projects while frontline care was under immense strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Nearly \u00a3400,000 on decorative &#8220;thank you&#8221; signs is impossible to justify when hospitals were overwhelmed, and lives were being lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Episodes like this underline why the NHS needs far stronger scrutiny and accountability over how money is spent, to ensure limited resources are <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-6576569\/Spending-control-four-10-NHS-hospitals-organisations.html\" rel=\"noopener\">directed to patient care rather than wasteful, box-ticking gestures<\/a>.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The signs line the street on both sides\u00a0in block colour for 250 metres outside King&#8217;s College Hospital along Denmark Hill, Camberwell. This means, over the two years of the pandemic, these 18 ventilators could have used on 1,310 patients &#8211; almost as many as those who died at King&#8217;s College Trust hospitals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">King&#8217;s College Trust led the campaign and spent\u00a0\u00a3338,694.40 for one side of the street and the inside of their hospitals to be covered, while South London and Maudsley Trust used the same campaign material, so spent only \u00a36,448.01.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">King&#8217;s College Trust doubled down on their defence of the massive public spending, with a spokesperson saying:\u00a0&#8216;Our Big Thank You campaign recognised the extraordinary dedication of hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;The same campaign materials were also used to support recruitment efforts at the Trust.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Trust&#8217;s FOI officer said that the signs &#8216;contributed to both staff morale and recruitment during that difficult period&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They continued: &#8216;The signs helped fill a significant number of vacancies in the Trust at that time and won awards for recruitment advertising.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">There were 300 pieces of artwork and 18 installations across the three King&#8217;s College Trust sites, according to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"class\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplescout.com\/insights\/kings-college-hospital-employee-engagement\/\">People Scout<\/a>, who were commissioned to make the signs for the Trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The &#8216;Big Thank You&#8217; campaign also received a refresh about a year after the signs were installed with more photos being taken of staff and published digitally.
