Frances Tiafoe has endured a tough start to his 2025 ATP campaign, suffering several disappointing defeats.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The American star began the year with ambitions of returning to the world\u2019s top ten, having reached his second Grand Slam semi-final at the 2024 US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those dreams haven\u2019t quite materialized, as Tiafoe<\/a> currently resides at 17th, after struggling during the early months of the year.<\/p>\n

Tiafoe was stunned by Fabian Marozsan<\/a> in the second round of the Australian Open in January, before embarking on an uninspiring 4-4 run across his next four tournaments.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old looked to have rediscovered his form in Houston when Tiafoe reached the final of the US Men\u2019s Clay Court Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Losing to Jenson Brooksby in the final, Tiafoe failed to make an impression at any of his next three ATP<\/a> tournaments (Monte-Carlo Masters, Barcelona Open, Madrid Open).<\/p>\n

Ahead of his return to action at the Italian Open<\/a>, Tiafoe has given his verdict on one of his fellow Americans.<\/p>\n

Frances Tiafoe says Tommy Paul is \u2018much more serious\u2019 now than he was before<\/p>\n

Appearing as a guest on the Changeover podcast, Tiafoe shared his thoughts on some of his countrymen. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cTommy [Paul]<\/a> is much more serious now than he was before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTommy was just as much of a clown as I was, doing anything, doing dumb s\u2014, getting injured, jumping fences.<\/p>\n

\u201cReilly [Opelka]<\/a> as he got older, got much more talkative, saying anything, not afraid of any type of controversy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying he\u2019s not nice, but he loves confrontation. He loves [going] back and forth and clowning guys, he\u2019s very funny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Opelka upset many with his comments about doubles<\/a> recently, suggesting that the discipline was for \u2018failed singles players\u2019.<\/p>\n

Tiafoe also revealed what he always does to Alexander Zverev<\/a>, the German world number two.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always clown [Alexander] Zverev,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was feeling himself from the jump. He walked the same, he always had the chains on, the band, the long hair. He\u2019s been feeling himself since the jump, that\u2019s my guy though.\u201d<\/p>\n

The world number 17 was then asked to pick the five ATP<\/a> players he\u2019d most like to go on a night out with.<\/p>\n

\u201cTommy is fun to go out with, [Nick] Kyrgios<\/a>, of course, he loves going out,\u201d said Tiafoe.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to say Gael [Monfils]<\/a>, Gael dances a tonne, it would be hilarious, but he doesn\u2019t drink, so it\u2019s kind of like\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in the day, it was me [Thanasi] Kokkinakis<\/a>, [Jack] Sock, Kyrgios, we did everything together, always out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comparing Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul\u2019s tennis achievements<\/p>\n

Tiafoe thinks Paul has become \u2018more serious\u2019 over the years, and while that may be the case, the results certainly look to validate his change in attitude.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old broke into the top ten for the first time following his run to the quarterfinals in Melbourne earlier this year, reaching a career-high ranking of ninth.<\/p>\n
