{"id":731189,"date":"2026-01-30T16:28:13","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T16:28:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/731189\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T16:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T16:28:13","slug":"northern-ireland-bird-watcher-captures-images-of-robin-with-rare-condition-that-affects-colour-of-its-feathers-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/731189\/","title":{"rendered":"Northern Ireland bird watcher captures images of Robin with rare condition that affects colour of its feathers \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A Robin with a rare condition that means part of its red breast and other plumage are coloured white has become a regular visitor to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/investigation-into-shooting-of-protected-falcon-in-co-tyrone-P3QT4S4TZBEA5HHWOROMPTCICQ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/investigation-into-shooting-of-protected-falcon-in-co-tyrone-P3QT4S4TZBEA5HHWOROMPTCICQ\/\">Co Tyrone garden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The bird was first spotted before Christmas near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/remembering-declan-quinn-rivalries-set-aside-to-remember-gifted-carrickmore-footballer-and-dedicated-family-man-N5YFNUZCZZBEPMTD7OED23S4TI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/remembering-declan-quinn-rivalries-set-aside-to-remember-gifted-carrickmore-footballer-and-dedicated-family-man-N5YFNUZCZZBEPMTD7OED23S4TI\/\">Ballgawley<\/a> and has made frequent visits to same spot over the last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Robin has a condition called leucism, a plumage abnormality sometimes seen in birds, that is caused by an absence of feather pigment cells. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The condition can occur with all birds, with some being completely leucistic \u2013 their plumage is completely white \u2013 or partial, depending on whether they are missing all or just some of their feather pigment cells. <\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/shankill-and-ardoyne-youths-gather-at-notorious-belfast-interface-to-clean-it-up-NNQO26HCBBBS5FGN26M5BO4A7Y\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Shankill and Ardoyne youths gather at notorious Belfast interface - to clean it up\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/ZEM4UQGEFFGQTMEJRWN2LMO4LQ.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/northern-ireland-council-director-loses-job-after-chief-executive-lost-confidence-ZJVWD6OY7ZDL7M7P2T5ISSNPP4\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Northern Ireland council director loses job after chief executive &#x2018;lost confidence&#x2019;\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1769790492_681_CYLD4EJ4Z5J67IVAHNT5ZDFTEU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While relatively rare, it is one of the most commonly reported plumage abnormalities observed in birds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The householder in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/car-crashes-into-shop-at-co-tyrone-filling-station-5M3PUB5ZGZEK5KIOBTWBOBLPFE\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/car-crashes-into-shop-at-co-tyrone-filling-station-5M3PUB5ZGZEK5KIOBTWBOBLPFE\/#\">Tyrone<\/a>, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he felt privileged to have the \u201cspecial bird\u201d visit his garden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI feed the birds on an almost daily basis and have had many interesting visitors over the years but nothing quite like this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s regarded as a sign of good luck but I certainly feel lucky that it comes to see me regularly. He\u2019s keen to feed and is tame but a brave little soul who\u2019s not easily intimidated away by another very territorial Robin nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He told how he alerted Joseph Kelly, a 15-year-old from nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/sport\/athletics\/2023\/09\/12\/news\/galbally_runners_launch_the_one_mile_road_relay_in_dungannon-3605622\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/sport\/athletics\/2023\/09\/12\/news\/galbally_runners_launch_the_one_mile_road_relay_in_dungannon-3605622\/\">Galbally<\/a>, who\u2019s a keen bird watcher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe almost immediately identified it as a \u2018pied Robin\u2019 and correctly said that it had a pigment problem similar to being an albino,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"j\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/HH7JUGF4XJFKTH5WFRHQIB4OAM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"1066\"\/>RSPB conservation advisor Jonathan Pinnick <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to RSPB conservation advisor Jonathan Pinnick, birds with plumage abnormalities such as leucism are often disadvantaged by their condition. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIt can send the wrong signals to normally plumaged individuals, causing difficulties with things like attracting a breeding partner or defending territory, and for smaller birds such as robins, it can make them more obvious to would-be predators,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The condition can also be passed on to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cLeucism is a genetic mutation in the pigmentation of feathers, so individuals that manage to breed successfully can potentially pass on the trait to future generations, however, because it is a recessive mutation this rarely happens,\u201d Mr Pinnick said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One recent similar case was that of Vivienne, a leucistic female Red Kite. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cVivienne hatched from a nest in the Dromara Hills in Co Down in 2018 &#8211; her unusual pale plumage made her easily recognisable and distinguishable from other Red Kites,\u201d Mr Pinnick said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cShe was admired by birdwatchers, members of the local community and visitors, and was a regularly seen in the Dromara area.
