{"id":73121,"date":"2025-05-04T06:06:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T06:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/73121\/"},"modified":"2025-05-04T06:06:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T06:06:11","slug":"right-wing-reform-scoops-big-wins-in-uk-local-elections-dw-05-02-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/73121\/","title":{"rendered":"Right-wing Reform scoops big wins in UK local elections \u2013 DW \u2013 05\/02\/2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/brexit\/t-19162392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> torchbearer Nigel Farage&#8217;s right-wing Reform UK party made early gains in local English election results on Friday \u2014 and also clinched a razor-thin win in a parliamentary byelection.<\/p>\n<p>The results mark a clear setback for <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/keir-starmer\/t-69584184\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a>&#8216;s center-left Labour Party, which has seen polling support plummet since taking power last July amid growing voter dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>What we know about Reform&#8217;s byelection victory<\/p>\n<p>The biggest single prize for the day was the parliamentary seat of Runcorn and Helsby in northwest England, which Reform won by just six votes after a full recount had been ordered.<\/p>\n<p>While narrow, the win highlighted a collapse in support for\u00a0Starmer&#8217;s Labour Party since it claimed the seat in last July&#8217;s national election with a majority of almost 15,000 votes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For the movement, for the party, it&#8217;s a very, very big moment indeed,&#8221; said Farage, who formerly led the anti-immigrant UK Independence and Brexit parties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a huge night for Reform,&#8221; Farage told reporters. &#8220;This is heartland Labour Party, their vote has collapsed and much of it has come to us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The byelection seat came up for grabs after a Labour lawmaker quit over his conviction for punching one of his constituents.<\/p>\n<p>What else did Reform win?<\/p>\n<p>Reform went further by grabbing dozens of local council seats from both Labour and the <a class=\"internal-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/uk-conservative-party-elects-kemi-badenoch-as-new-leader\/a-70667955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Conservative Party<\/a> as Britain&#8217;s already polarized political landscape shows signs of further fragmentation.<\/p>\n<p>Is Britain seeing the end of its famous fish and chips?<video id=\"video-71287088\" controls=\"\" playsinline=\"\" preload=\"none\" poster=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAAEAAAABCAQAAAC1HAwCAAAAC0lEQVR42mNkYAAAAAYAAjCB0C8AAAAASUVORK5CYII=\" data-id=\"71287088\" data-posterurl=\"https:\/\/static.dw.com\/image\/71269146_605.webp\" data-duration=\"05:46\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"vjs-no-js\">To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that <a href=\"https:\/\/videojs.com\/html5-video-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supports HTML5 video<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/video><\/p>\n<p>Reform, which recently finished ahead of the two main parties, was in first place in the total number of councilors elected on Friday morning, with about 125 council seats declared.<\/p>\n<p>The party also won a mayoral race in Greater Lincolnshire, with former Conservative minister Andrea Jenkyns, who defected to Reform after losing her seat last year.<\/p>\n<p>Reform was founded as the Brexit Party in 2018 and has seen a surge in its support over recent months.<\/p>\n<p>Labour also came close to losing three other mayoral seats, in North Tyneside, the West of England and Doncaster.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to 2021, Labour support in North Tyneside plummeted by 23 percentage points and 11 percentage points in Doncaster.<\/p>\n<p>What do the results mean for UK politics?<\/p>\n<p>Reform has wrested support from Britain&#8217;s two main parties, capitalizing on a drop in support for Labour, but also on\u00a0disillusionment with the Conservative Party.<\/p>\n<p>It hopes the results will give it a launchpad to challenge them at the next national election, expected in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>The party advocates strict immigration controls and deportations, often using tough rhetoric, and is heavily invested in culture war issues.
