Brexit heavyweights have warned that Labour is \u201cbetraying\u201d the opportunities on offer from exiting the EU.<\/p>\n
Nigel Farage<\/a>, Boris Johnson<\/a>, Kemi Badenoch and Jacob Rees-Mogg have backed a Daily Express campaign demanding Sir Keir Starmer<\/a> \u201cGives Us a Proper Brexit<\/a>\u201d ahead of the 10th anniversary of the referendum.<\/p>\n Reform UK leader Nigel Farage slammed how \u201cbetrayal has followed betrayal\u201d despite more than 17 million people voting to leave the Bloc.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cThe many benefits of our hard-fought Brexit freedoms are still there to be seized yet bafflingly Labour shows every sign of wanting to drag us back under the heel of Brussels. Are they completely mad?\u201d<\/p>\n The Brexit architect added: \u201cThe truth is this Labour government is hellbent on blaming all the country’s current travails on Brexit simply to mask their own incompetence.\u201d<\/p>\n Former Prime Minister Mr Johnson told how it had been six years since Express readers helped \u201cfinally deliver Brexit\u201d.<\/p>\n The newspaper became the first in 2010 to declare Britain must leave the EU.<\/p>\n He said: \u201cThis country took back control of its laws, its borders and huge sums of money we were sending to Brussels.<\/p>\n \u201cWithin less than a year, Brexit proved its worth as our regulatory freedom allowed the UK to vaccinate its population faster than any other European country.<\/p>\n \u201cThat meant we came out of Covid<\/a> lockdowns faster and had a faster economy rebound than any country in the G7. Brexit immediately paid off – saving lives and saving jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n But Mr Johnson, a central figure in delivering Brexit, told how the UK is \u201cgroaning\u201d under the \u201ceconomic misery\u201d of Sir Keir\u2019s government.<\/p>\n The former Conservative leader, who won the 2019 general election on the promise to “get Brexit done”, said: \u201cThe UK is now groaning under the economic misery of a high tax, high regulation, high unemployment Labour government.<\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong> ‘The EU is so bitter about Brexit it’s trying to destroy the UK car industry’ <\/a><\/p>\n Read more:<\/strong> ‘Brexit gives Britain chance of renewal \u2013 we must stop squandering opportunity’ <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cTo make matters worse, the Starmer government is keeping us in lockstep with the sclerotic EU economy.<\/p>\n \u201cLabour is failing to take advantage of Brexit. By slowly taking us back into the orbit of Brussels the Starmer government is destroying Brexit.<\/p>\n \u201cThey are destroying the UKs potential to do things differently and better. It is time to stand up for our hard won democratic freedoms.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd Save Brexit from Starmer.\u201d<\/p>\n The Express\u2019s crusade will call for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), slashing red tape for businesses and enforcing a 12 mile exclusion zone around the UK for British vessels only.<\/p>\n It comes as the Prime Minister has pushed for closer post-Brexit economic relations with the Bloc since coming into power in July 2024.<\/p>\n Sir Keir said this week that he wants to \u201cgo further\u201d in moving Britain closer to the EU single market as he cranked up his plot to reverse Brexit.<\/p>\n This is despite a manifesto promise not to rejoin the EU single market or customs union.<\/p>\n Speaking to reporters en-route to China, where he is in the middle of a trade visit, the Prime Minister said: \u201cI do think that we\u2019ve made progress on the single market – food and agriculture is already in the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement that we have already agreed and that\u2019s going to be implemented.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s an agreement which will bring cheaper prices in our supermarkets.\u201d<\/p>\n But Sir Keir said he wants to go further.<\/p>\n \u201cI think we should not just follow through on what we\u2019ve already agreed. I think the relationship with the EU and every summit should be iterative. We should be seeking to go further.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd I think there are other areas in the single market where we should look to see whether we can make more progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n Europe Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds and Business Secretary Peter Kyle will hold talks about EU alignment with their European counterparts on Tuesday.<\/p>\n It comes ahead of the next UK-EU summit, which is expected to take place in May.<\/p>\n The UK is already lining up with Brussels on some rules around food and agriculture to allow access to the economic European trading zone.<\/p>\n Joining the EU\u2019s single market would eliminate trade tariffs between Britain and the EU but Westminster would have to follow rules set by Brussels and accept free movement of people.<\/p>\n Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: \u201cWe have the opportunity to make Britain more competitive than Europe, to use the very best of British education, engineering and enterprise to attract investment and ensure we have a strong economy and more, better-paid jobs.<\/p>\n \u201cBut, under Labour unemployment has gone up almost every month and economic growth has stagnated. Keir Starmer is dragging us backwards, re-fighting the battles of the past, too busy trying to save his own skin than do what’s best for our country.<\/p>\n
