An ICE paramilitary unit is now being sent along with the US delegation to the Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy, sparking outrage from the city\u2019s mayor.<\/p>\n
The US president believes the EU\u2019s handling of its own immigration as an existential crisis for European civilisation. \u201cI love Europe, and I want to see Europe go good, but it\u2019s not heading in the right direction,\u201d Trump said in Davos, explicitly mentioning \u201cunchecked mass migration\u201d as one of Europe\u2019s main problems.<\/p>\n
And the US president has explicitly praised, in his national security strategy, the increased influence of anti-migrant European parties on the far-right of the political spectrum.<\/p>\n
Senior policy communications officer Gianluca Cesaro at human rights NGO Picum<\/a> told EUobserver: \u201cfar-right politicians across Europe have echoed similar comments in relation to \u2018great replacement theories\u2019.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhile EU leaders may not embrace \u2014 at least publicly \u2014 Trump\u2019s narrative around civilisational erasure, EU migration policies increasingly treat migration and migrants as a threat,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n The European Commission has announced a new five-year vision on migration<\/a> that takes a sharp pivot towards Trump\u2019s rhetoric. People hoping to seek asylum in Europe will find themselves faced with even more obstacles as the EU attempts to further offshore its responsibilities onto other countries through any means possible.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n When asked at a Brussels press conference whether the new EU strategy should calm US nerves, Magnus Brunner, EU migration commissioner, said the bloc wants migration, but did mention how the recent influx has caused a strain.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cIn the last 10 years, we took a lot of responsibility\u2026 But we didn\u2019t have control. We didn\u2019t have rules,\u201d said Brunner. \u201cGetting control back, I think, is really important, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re doing with our reforms\u201d.<\/p>\n 2. Minnesota Pretti killing\u00a0<\/p>\n On 24 January, US citizen Alex Pretti was shot multiple times and killed<\/a> by federal ICE agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota \u2014 sparking mass protests against Trump\u2019s immigration enforcement measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n The European Commission did not condemn the killing and regarded it as a domestic issue \u2014 a sharp contrast with its approach in 2020, when the rhetoric<\/a> from diplomats in response to George Floyd\u2019s killing took a stronger stance against violence perpetrated by US authorities.<\/p>\n When questioned about the Pretti killing on Monday (26 January), a commission spokesperson gave a non-committal response: \u201cNo comments to be made on this US internal matter, but of course we deplore any loss of innocent lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n And when pushed by reporters about their use of the term \u201cinnocent,\u201d the commission backtracked from the word.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s not for us to judge innocent or not innocent. Any life lost, we deplore it in general, and it is, of course, for the justice system in the US to establish the facts,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n After the killing of Renee Good on 7 January, Pretti is the second shooting in the city, which saw 3,000<\/a> ICE agents deployed. The Associated Press report<\/a> Pretti was the sixth person to die during the Trump administration\u2019s immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n Good was killed just 1.6km<\/a> away from where, in 2020, Floyd was murdered by police officer Derek Chauvin \u2014 sparking mass protests under the \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d movement across the world.<\/p>\n 3. Greenland and Rutte<\/p>\n At the epicentre of the Greenland conflict is ex-Dutch prime minister and current Nato chief Mark Rutte, the only person seemingly able to sway Trump away from his all-or-nothing demands for Greenland and trade retaliation against Europe.<\/p>\n Just before an emergency summit of EU leaders in January, Rutte and the US president worked out a still-mysterious verbal deal on advancing talks between the US and Denmark over Greenland and Arctic security.<\/p>\n \u201cBased upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the secretary general of Nato, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic region,\u201d wrote Trump on Truth Social platform back then.\u00a0<\/p>\n But when Rutte came to explain it <\/a>himself to MEPs, Italian Left MEP Danilo Della Valle called his deal a \u201cstrategy of appeasement and submissiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n While few if any real details are publicly available, the president did go on Fox News<\/a> and say: \u201cWe\u2019re getting everything we want, at no cost.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Rutte did not criticise Trump or his threats, instead saying the US president \u201cwas right\u201d to push the issue of Arctic security and had done \u201ca lot of good stuff\u201d for Nato.<\/p>\n Responding to Rutte\u2019s posture, former EU council president Charles Michel wrote <\/a>in a social media post: \u201cNato needs unity, not alignment to some capital. I expect Rutte to work for the alliance, not as an American agent. Appeasement doesn\u2019t work. Flattering diplomacy leads to total failure.\u201d<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the European Commission has itself struggled to come forward with a clear position on Greenland, at least during the first weeks of 2026.<\/p>\n When pressed by the reporters in Brussels, the commission initially refused to confirm whether the mutual defence provisions under EU treaties would apply to Greenland, although it later confirmed that, in principle, it would.\u00a0<\/p>\n 4. The \u2018Board of Peace\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n Also at Davos, Trump officially announced<\/a> the formation of his \u201cBoard of Peace,\u201d which attempts to bring together nations to fulfil the current Gaza peace agreement and work for continued peace in the region (and beyond) \u2014 an initiative bombarded with criticism.\u00a0<\/p>\n Many invitees, especially from the EU \u2013 such as France and Germany<\/a> \u2013 have declined the invitation to join, citing major legal concerns with the current framework. However, the EU institutions remain open to the body.<\/p>\n The idea of the board was approved by the United Nations Security Council but was limited to the Gaza conflict and set to expire in 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n The initiative, however, has drawn stinging criticism from governments and NGOs<\/a>, due to Trump himself being the inaugural chairman with immense institutional power, invitees such as Vladimir Putin, and its charter not mentioning the devastation in Palestine.<\/p>\n EU institutions, however, are seemingly open to participating, as long as it aligns with the UN\u2019s requirements.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n After the emergency summit of EU leaders on transatlantic relations last week, president of the EU Council, Ant\u00f3nio Costa, affirmed<\/a> many of the concerns around the board, but said the institution is willing to work with the initiative.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are ready to work together with the US on the implementation of the comprehensive Peace Plan for Gaza, with a Board of Peace carrying out its mission as a transitional administration, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n 5.
