{"id":731513,"date":"2026-01-30T19:57:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T19:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/731513\/"},"modified":"2026-01-30T19:57:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T19:57:11","slug":"bartlett-director-kulper-to-leave-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/731513\/","title":{"rendered":"Bartlett director Kulper to leave school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kulper, who is set to depart in July, arrived at the Bartlett as director in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/bartlett\/news\/2022\/sep\/bartlett-school-architecture-welcomes-new-director-amy-kulper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">September 2022<\/a> in the aftermath of a \u2018shocking\u2019 report, which uncovered bullying, sexual misconduct, racism and a \u2018toxic culture spanning decades\u2019 at the famous London school.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, UCL informed staff that Kulper would be leaving at the end of the current academic year.<\/p>\n<p>In an email sent to her colleagues and seen by the AJ, Bartlett dean Jacqui Glass thanked Kulper for her commitment to \u2018embedding cultural change at the the school\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It went on to note her role in \u2018leading the school\u2019s overall approach to the forthcoming ARB-mandated and far-reaching changes to architectural education\u2019. The email concluded: \u2018I hope there will be many opportunities over the coming months for us to thank Amy for her service and wish her every success for her future endeavours.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about Kulper\u2019s appointment in 2022, Christoph Lindner, the then dean of The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and chair of the selection committee, described her as \u2018an inspirational voice for architectural education internationally\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u2018She has a driving passion for the transformative power of equality, diversity and inclusion in higher education, alongside extensive and nuanced knowledge and experience in the field of architecture, bridging practice, design, history and theory.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The university began its hunt for a new director in late 2021 as an investigation started into the \u2018culture and behaviours\u2019 at the architecture school, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bullying-bartlett-abused-ex-students-are-poised-to-take-legal-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple allegations of bullying<\/a> made by former students \u2013 some of which included claims of sex or race-based discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>Kulper\u2019s appointment was announced in March 2022 just months before the Bartlett published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/bartlett-investigation-damning-report-reveals-toxic-culture-spanning-decades\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">findings of an investigation<\/a>, which identified \u2018a culture of unacceptable behaviour dating back several years\u2019 and which contained \u2018frank and shocking testimonies from former and current students and staff, including allegations of bullying, harassment, racism and sexual misconduct\u2019 (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/opinion\/bartlett-chiefs-report-makes-for-painful-reading-this-behaviour-must-stop-now\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bartlett chiefs: Report makes for painful reading \u2013 this behaviour must stop now<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In response to the report, which was compiled by consultancy Howlett Brown, a number of staff were removed from student-facing and administrative duties pending investigations and UCL apologised \u2018unreservedly to everyone who has experienced unacceptable behaviour during their time at the school\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Kulper, the former head of architecture at Rhode Island School of Design, came in as the permanent replacement for Bob Sheil, who had been director in 2014 for a four-year period and was later handed a four-year extension in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The UCL and Kulper have been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Kulper, who is set to depart in July, arrived at the Bartlett as director in September 2022 in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":731514,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[3939],"tags":[217287,4021,4020,217288,217289,4022,77,16,15],"class_list":["post-731513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arts-and-design","tag-amy-kulper","tag-arts","tag-arts-and-design","tag-bartlett-school-of-architecture","tag-bob-sheil","tag-design","tag-entertainment","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115985818726433629","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/731513","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=731513"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/731513\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/731514"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=731513"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=731513"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=731513"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
