This volcanic archipelago feels like a tropical island thousands of miles away, with lush, dense forests climbing up the mountainsides, and waterfalls hidden along pretty hikes.

While it’s not the place for guaranteed heat, it is a paradise for anyone who prefers scenery over sunbeds. The weather shifts across the island from 14C to 19C thanks to its dramatic peaks, but it couldn’t be better for nature lovers, with mild winter sunshine and low rainfall making near-perfect conditions for exploring the many hikes and waterfalls.

We tried one of the most famous walks, the Pico do Arieiro, where early birds are rewarded with a stunning sunrise above the clouds and rugged peaks. Arrive early, becuase this viewpoint fills up quickly.

The Levada das 25 Fontes is a gentler stroll and one of the island’s most trodden, winding through an emerald forest to a series of waterfalls.

Although buses link Funchal with many of the headline attractions, a car is essential if you’d prefer to see quiet viewpoints, roadside cafés and spontaneous detours. Just know it is not for the faint-hearted; some of the hills are near-vertical or completely covered in fog.

Madeira also more than delivers on food, with Funchal at its heart. Thanks to its fertile volcanic soil and subtropical climate, local produce thrives, while seafood is hauled fresh from the Atlantic each day, best enjoyed with a glass of Madeira wine.

One standout dish has to be the grilled octopus, served piping hot and laced with garlicky oil on a bed of soft potatoes. Don’t forget to add a pastel de nata to your morning coffee order too.

But before you settle down to feast, head to the tropical gardens at Monte Palace in Funchal, which have some of the best views of the city thanks to their vantage point.

Even though it may seem like a gimmick, you must try the famously quirky toboggan run from Monte. Arrive early, though, as crowds build quickly.

Flights to Madeira operate from several UK airports, including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Belfast and Glasgow.

[5174
2000,299,5187,14311,217391,33388,52766,217392,16945,57944
post-732166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-eu","tag-eu","tag-europe","tag-european","tag-funchal","tag-hawaii-of-europe","tag-hiking","tag-madeira","tag-madeira-holidays","tag-portugal-holidays","tag-travel-section
["GET
