You’ve arrived at the airport in good time and your luggage has been carefully packed, weighed and measured – but is your passport valid?

Recent years have seen a number of additional factors for British travellers to consider when travelling to Europe. Plus, the introduction of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), which replaces passport stamps with facial and fingerprint scans, means long queues at security are already a possibility.

“Post-Brexit travel changes are still confusing for many of us, so it’s important for Brits to familiarise themselves with the validity requirements before jetting off to Europe,” said travel insurance expert, Ian Wilson. In addition, it’s important to make sure passports are in good physical condition, as damage could lead to delays or even refusal at the border.

OFF ON HOLIDAY?

“If you’re denied access to your flight for issues such as an invalid passport, your travel insurance is unlikely to protect you,” adds Ian. The team at tiger.co.uk have highlighted seven essential passport checks to carry out well in advance of your departure date:

1. Blank passport pages: While the EES will eventually replace passport stamps, you must have at least two blank passport pages or the document could be seen as invalid. Those travelling more frequently can opt for a jumbo passport that has 54 pages instead of a normal one with 34 pages.

2. Expiry date: Many countries require passports to be valid for at least six months beyond the date of arrival. In Europe, passports must be valid for at least three months beyond the date of departure and must have been issued less than 10 years ago.

3. Child passport: Passports for children under 16 are only valid for five years. They often expire before parents realise so should be checked and, if necessary, renewed in good time to avoid delays or travel disruption.

4. Water damage: If your passport has sustained water damage, you’re unlikely to be able to use it as a valid travel document. While minor exposure to water such as slightly crinkled page edges shouldn’t be an issue, smudged ink or discolouration can lead to delays or refusals at passport control.

 STYLISH SUITCASES 🧳

This article contains affiliate links and we may receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Learn more.

The Elements Olive Green Suitcase from Dunelm costs from £28 and comes in a rainbow of colours including ochre, aqua and fuschia.

The Flymax Lightweight Spinner starts at £34.99 on Amazon. Tears or rips: If any of your passport pages are torn or missing, it is unlikely to be accepted at the border. If the personal details are difficult or impossible to read, or any visa stamps are affected, the passport will be considered damaged.

6. Peeling laminate: If the laminate over the personal details page is lifting or peeling, it could raise suspicions of tampering. This is a common reason for passports being flagged or rejected so it’s best to get the passport replaced to prevent any issues.

7. Visa requirements: Holidaymakers need to familiarise themselves with the entry requirements of the country they’re travelling to and acquire a travel visa if needed. When travelling to Europe, you don’t need a visa for trips of up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business, or short-term studies.

Looking ahead, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is expected to launch in late 2026. This will affect UK travellers going to countries in the Schengen area, including popular holiday destinations such as Italy, France, Greece and Spain.

MORE TRAVEL TIPS

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: A damaged passport could lead to long delays or you may be refused entry (Image: Ethan…

[5174
2236,2000,299,5187,6096,760
0":"post-73293","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-affiliates","9":"tag-eu","10":"tag-europe","11":"tag-european","12":"tag-national","13":"tag-traffic-and-travel
["GET
