{"id":73322,"date":"2025-05-04T07:56:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T07:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/73322\/"},"modified":"2025-05-04T07:56:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T07:56:10","slug":"sam-querrey-claims-the-madrid-open-have-made-a-change-to-their-tournament-which-makes-things-worse-for-anyone-watching-on-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/73322\/","title":{"rendered":"Sam Querrey claims the Madrid Open have made a change to their tournament which makes things worse for anyone watching on TV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Madrid Open is remembered not just for the memorable moments on court but the time they opted to use blue clay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outside of the traditional red or orange clay, green clay is used in the United States, but back in 2012, the Spanish capital decided to shake things up.<\/p>\n<p>It was an experiment that was short lived however, as the red clay was back at the tournament the following year.<\/p>\n<p>But former player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/sam-querrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Querrey<\/a>, thinks the Madrid Open should have kept the blue clay a little longer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"597\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-144257884-1024x597.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Mike Hewitt\/Getty Images\" \/>Photo by Mike Hewitt\/Getty Images<strong>Why does Sam Querrey think the Madrid Open should have kept the blue clay?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2012 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/madrid-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madrid Open<\/a> opted for blue clay in a bid to improve the viewing experience for fans watching on television.<\/p>\n<p>But after the tournament players such as the tournament\u2019s most successful player <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/rafael-nadal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rafael Nadal<\/a>, and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/novak-djokovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Novak Djokovic<\/a>, threatened to boycott future editions of the event.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore the decision was made to revert back to red clay, but Querrey explains the blue clay in Madrid should have remained.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo awesome. Watching blue clay, like from laying in bed, turn it on in Madrid and it\u2019s blue and you could see the ball,\u201d the American said on the Nothing Major podcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning I turned on Madrid and the court was half sunny and half shady, it was so difficult to see the ball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get the purists or if you\u2019re at the event it\u2019s easier, but on TV there was nothing better than watching Madrid with blue clay.
